Sylvia C. Cohodas of Longboat Key, FL died of natural causes February 18. She was 93.
She moved permanently to Longboat in 1994 and often said the 'cultural climate here is as lovely as the actual climate.' She loved the arts, took advantage of all that was offered and happily supported the various cultural organizations in the city.
Sylvia was born in Ishpeming, Michigan March 23, 1921, graduated from Ishpeming high school and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Michigan in 1942. She married Arnold Cohodas in 1943 (deceased 1987) and they had two children, Howard and Nadine, who survive her.
Sylvia was a founding member of Temple Beth Sholom in Ishpeming, MI, a member of its first choir and sang Kol Nidre, the central prayer of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, in the temple's first years.
In Longboat, she was a member of Temple Beth Israel and proudly celebrated her Bat Mitzah as an adult in May 1997.
Music was central to her life and she shared her enthusiasm with all who knew her. Her favorite song was, 'Begin the Beguine', whose sheet music remained on her piano until her last day.
In addition to her children, she is survived by her brother Edward Casper (Carole) and several nieces and nephews.
A private family service will be held in Marinette, WI on Monday, February 23, 2015, with burial in Congregation Montefiore Cemetery.
