Guy Stivers Obituary

STIVERS, GUY P.; age 82; of Dexter, Michigan; passed away on Sunday, July 7, 2013. He was born on February 19, 1931, in Ann Arbor Michigan, to Guy and Nina (Eschelbach) Stivers. He graduated from Ann Arbor High School and enlisted in the US Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was stationed in London for some time, but eventually landed in Rapid City, South Dakota. It was during his time in SD that he met his wife of 58 years, Ruth. They married in 1955 and came back to Ann Arbor where they lived until they started their family business in Chelsea. They ran Stivers Restaurant/Bar together for 33 years. Guy had many outside interests. He loved old cars and there is a barn full of them to prove it. He was happiest spending his time playing with his "toys." He also loved flying and air shows were one of his favorite pastimes. Guy was a member of the Dexter American Legion and the Dexter Classic Car Club. He was also a big Michigan Football fan having seen his first game when he was just a kid and then spending 30 plus years cheering on the Maize and Blue from the stands with Ruth. He loved to travel and Colorado was one of his favorite destinations, but any road trip out west was fine with him. After selling the business and retiring in 1987, Guy and Ruth spent most of the colder months at their Florida home on Siesta Key, coming back to Michigan to spend the holidays with family and friends. Guy is survived by his daughter, Nina and son-in-law, Jack Risner; Jack's children, Kevin Risner and Michelle Risner; Kevin's son, Caden and Michelle's daughter, Adler; his niece ,Kim Stivers; nephews, Kurt and Scott Stivers; and Scott's children, Christina, Matthew and Thomas. Guy had countless friends and family members, everywhere. He seemed to know everyone. He was proceeded in death by his parents; his brother, King Stivers; and very recently, his wife, Ruth. A Graveside Service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, July 12, 2013 at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Dexter, Michigan. A Celebration of Life will follow at the Dexter American Legion to honor Guy and Ruth and their time together.

I am sorry to hear of Ruth and Guy's passing.I was with Guy when we met Ruth in a restaurant in Rapid City, South Dakota in the early '50's.Guy and I were close buddies during our Air Force days-'50 to '54.When we were at RAF Sculthorpe in England for 4 months in summer of 1951, we rented a 1937 Morris van together, and took off for many great adventures touring from London to Scotland. When we returned to Columbus, Ohio we shared an off base apt, and when we were in Rapid City did the same for 2 1/2 years. We spent some time on air crews in the B-36's we worked on at the time.It is said that you are fortunate if you have one really great friend in your life, and I have been blessed to have had two- Guy is one of them, even though it spanned a short period of 4 years.

I was so sorry to hear of your passing. When I met the two of you back in 1979 I was 24 but still wet behind the ears, lol. Both of you were wonderful to work for - I grew up at Stivers and met a lot of nice people including your daughter, Nina, who became one of my closest and dearest friends. Both of you will be missed. God be with you.
