Msgr. James A. Moloney

1930 - 2024

Monsignor James A. Moloney, a beloved figure in the Detroit Catholic community and a tireless servant of the Church, passed away, January 3, 2024 peacefully at his parish home in Dearborn Heights. Msgr. was 93 years young. He was the second son of five boys born to his Irish Canadian parents, the late Edith and Peter J. Moloney. Msgr. James Moloney is survived by his brother Lawrence (the late Anne), his two sisters-in-law Elaine and Phyllis and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Peter, Paul and Perry. He attended schools at St. Mary of Redford, Detroit, Sacred Heart Seminary and St. John's Provincial Seminary in Plymouth. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 2, 1956. He also earned a master's degree at the University of Detroit. Msgr. Moloney was appointed the Archdiocesan Director of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith in 1961. In over six decades, he visited 58 countries, delving into the conditions of those served by the Pope's Missions. His efforts elevated Detroit as the leading diocese in mission support, contributing over $200 million worldwide. He became pastor of St. Anselm Parish in Dearborn Heights in 1978 where he served until his death. In 1990, he was recognized with the title, Monsignor, Honorary Prelate by Pope John Paul II. In 2005, Pope Benedict elevated him to the honorary title of Protonotary Apostolic. He served numerous national and local roles across the Archdiocese of Detroit. Msgr. Moloney was also a hockey player for thirty years playing right wing on the priest's hockey team. Mass of the Resurrection was held on Wednesday, January 10, 2024 at St. Anselm Catholic Church, 17650 W. Outer Drive, Dearborn Heights. Interment Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Funeral arrangements entrusted to the Dearborn Chapel of Voran Funeral Home. Donations may be made in Msgr. James Moloney's honor to St. Anselm Parish and/or the Msgr.
