Barry Grant Benfield, Sr.

June 23, 1942 - September 20, 2025

BARRY GRANT BENFIELD, SR., age 83, of Hickory, N.C., passed away at home on Saturday, September 20, 2025, after a period of declining health.

Barry was born June 23, 1942, in Caldwell County, the oldest child and only son of Ledford Waitsel Grant Benfield and Sarah Burns Benfield.

Barry graduated from Hudson High School, then went on to attend college at V.P.I. (Virginia Tech University) with a full athletic scholarship in basketball. He graduated with a bachelor's and a master's degree.

Barry retired from Garware Fulflex USA, Inc. in 2004. Although retired, he continued his passion for building by working as a licensed general contractor until 2022.

Barry loved the outdoors-hunting, fishing, or simply enjoying God's beauty while sitting on his back deck watching deer.

Barry was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and shared his God-given gifts as chairman of the trustees for many years.

Barry was unforgettable. He never met a stranger, and no matter if he knew you or not, he always wanted a hug from the ladies. He had a lifetime of making friends, many lifelong. Barry was the one you called if you needed anything, from advice to a few dollars if you were in a bind.

Remaining to cherish Barry's memory are his wife, Marsha Sigmon Benfield; his children, Kim Davis (Mitch), Grant Benfield (Cindy), Lisa Semple (Robert), and Anna Harding (Brian); seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Also surviving are his sisters, Myra Grove (John), Pam Steele (Steve), and Stephanie Raby (Charlie); cousins, Frances Bibb (Lewis) and David Johnson; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding Barry in death were his parents and his stepson, James Crowe.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, September 28, at Bethel United Methodist Church, 80 28th Street, N.W., Hickory, N.C. Family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m., followed by services at 3 p.m., with Pastor Jan Lovelace and Pastor Roger Sailors officiating.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Bethel United Methodist Church.
