Bobby Phillips

1937 - 2026

Bobby James Phillips, 88 of Hickory, North Carolina went to be with His Lord on Sunday, February 1, 2026. He passed peacefully from this life to the next at his home with his family around him.

Bobby was born in Murphy, N.C. on March 20, 1937 to Tommy Phillips and Pearl Rogers Phillips. He was the oldest of seven children. He graduated from Murphy High School in 1956. He attended and also taught in Community College.

His business career highlighted as a State Farm lnsurance Agent in Hickory, N.C. from 1975 to 2000, earning him much recognition and many trips all over the world.

Bobby was an outstanding athlete as a basketball player and volunteer coach. He was also a 2 handicap Golfer and swing analyst teacher.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Tommy and Pearl Phillips; two sisters, Betty Phillips Smith and Barbara Phillips; one brother, Ray Phillips and a daughter, Dana Phillips.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Jan Smart Phillips of the home; a son, Darryl James Phillips (Anita), a daughter, Deborah Belk; 6 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Charles Phillips (Donna), of Hickory, Steve Phillips (Doris), Johnny Phillips (Glenda); a sister-in-law, Faye Phillips (Ray), many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held at The Chapel in Hickory, N.C. at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, February 4, 2026.

The family will receive friends following the service and a graveside burial will be held at a later date. Rev. Dr. Dale Watts, Rev. Mark Morris, Rev. Larry Phillips, and Jennifer Phillips Queen will officiate.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Carolina Caring at 3975 Robinson Rd Suite B, Newton, NC 28658.
