Dan Espey Obituary

HICKORY - Dr. Dan Espey Jr., M.D., 87, of Hickory, passed away Monday, Oct. 19, 2009, at his residence following a period of declining health. He was born July 11, 1922, in McHenry, Ky., to the late Dan Espey Sr. and May Ingraham Espey. He was a graduate of the University of Louisville School of Medicine. Dr. Espey was diagnosed with tuberculosis while a medical resident in Lexington, Ky., an experience that led to his first practice as a staff physician of the Western North Carolina Sanitorium in Black Mountain, treating tuberculosis patients and spawned a lifelong interest in pulmonary disease. In 1959, he moved with his family to Hickory and established a private practice in family medicine. During his 40-year career as a physician, he deeply valued his relationships with patients and the opportunity to serve the community. In addition, during the late 1960s and early '70s, he made three tours to Vietnam to treat the civilian population as a volunteer physician with the American Medical Association's Project Vietnam. After retirement from private practice in 1989, he continued to work part time as physician on staff at the Cardiac Rehab Center of Frye Hospital, where he enjoyed working with many new and former patients. Dr. Espey was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Hickory. He enjoyed foreign travel, especially to Asia, collecting antiques, clocks and had an appreciation for old cars and sports cars. He was an avid reader and spent much of his later years relaxing at his farm/retreat outside of Hickory. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, the former Martha King, and five children, Joel and Daniel and daughter-in-law, Debra, all of Hickory, Edward (Ned) and daughter-in-law, Josephine, of Dhaka, Bangladesh, Mary and son-in-law, Anthony, of Chappaqua, N.Y., and David and daughter-in-law, Eve, of Albuquerque, N.M. He had nine grandchildren, Lee, Emily, James, Eric, Samuel, Zeke, Nigel, Paul and Nathan, and many special nieces and nephews. The Espey family is deeply grateful to the caring services of Palliative CareCenter & Hospice of Catawba Valley, particularly Jean Rowe and Gail Jonas. A memorial service will be held at noon Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009, at First Presbyterian Church in Hickory, conducted by Associate Pastor Deborah A. McEachran. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Palliative CareCenter & Hospice of Catawba Valley and Habitat for Humanity. Allen Mitchell Funeral Homes of Hickory is in charge of arrangements.

Dear Mrs. Espey,

We sadly heard of your loss thru my friend Donna (Corpening) Horton. I have fond memory of meeting Dr. Espey along with the family during summer of 1983 in your house. Since then I knew lot of him thru your son and my friend Ned. Dr. Espey had told me that I was first Nepali to have visited his house and expressed what a joy that was - a very warm reception for me by chance, although, the way he was, he would easily find another way to connect and touch my heart.

We pray for peace of his departed soul.

Dear Espey family,

My thoughts and prayers are with you during this time of loss. I just learned of Dr. Espey's death yesterday from my father. Together, we reminisced all that Dr. Espey has meant to our family -- a treasured friend and beloved physician. And through his friendship, we've had the blessing of getting to know your family; for that, we're thankful as well.

Dr. Espey was never too busy to take that extra time to check on us -- all of us -- over four generations!

I remember the caring, love and respect he gave my grandmother as she battled ill health for many years. And then, nearly 20 years later, when Dr. Espey came to see me in the hospital when my daughter, Hayley, now 16, was born and how he picked her up; it was as if she knew she was being cradled by one of the best -- and she was. We all were "cradled" by his caring spirit.

I am thankful that we have had Dr. Espey and your whole family in our lives. God bless.

Daniel and Family,
I know that I have been absent from Hickory for a while, but I do want you to know that Dr. Espey and family have had a presence in my mind.
Dr. Espey, what can I say...I remember him eating mashed bananas and telling me to stay out of the sun...
My heart goes out to each of you in your loss. I know he was greatly loved and will greatly be misseed.
I am thinking of you all during this time and I know that whatever was going on with his health...he no longer suffers. Please have peace in knowing this.
With loving thoughts and prayers, Martha Bost-Hannafey

Dr. Espey was a great guy with a very rye sense of humor. I always enjoyed speaking with him. He gave me advice when marrying Linda Mull, "Now you treat her right." I replied, "'Yes sir!"

May he rest in peace.

Dr. Espey was our family physician when I was growing up. He was the kindest and most considerate and compassionate physician that I've ever known. I often thought about him over the years. You have our deepest sympathy. God bless you.

He was an amazing, caring physician. I remember him coming to our house in the 1960's to treat my grandfather who had cancer. He was what a family doctor should be.

A caring man of great humor. He will be missed by many. Our thoughts and prayers to Aunt Martha and all the cousins of each generation.

Daniel, your father was simply a role model of an 'ordinary' man using his talents, his gifts, his very being every day of his life in servant leadership-he was EXTRAORDINARY. I know as your family grieves this loss you also celebrate a life lived to the fullest. Our hearts are with you, Debbie, Lee, Emily and your whole family at this sad time. Dr. Espey was my doctor for many years
beginning when he first came to Hickory. I was a patient at Black Mt.and had part of a lung removed. I credit him for saving my life. I am now 65 years old. You should be so very
proud of all he has done for the health
profession.
