Eddie Sigmon Obituary

Eddie Mal Sigmon

October 9, 1942 - September 27, 2022

Eddie Mal Sigmon, 79, departed this earthly life Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2022.

Born in Catawba County, Oct. 9, 1942, he was the second of four children of the late Mal Pinkney Sigmon and Lois Cordelia Sigmon. Predeceasing him in death, in addition to his parents, were his in-laws, Dalthard L. Sigmon "Jim" and Hazel Lail Sigmon; godchild and niece, Nancy "Denise" Huffman; brother-in-law, Steven W. Sigmon; and great-niece, Karlee Bumgarner.

While a member of St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Hickory, Eddie earned the Eagle Scout and the Pro Deo et Patria ("For God and Country") awards.

A 1961 graduate of St. Stephens High School, he was selected as an all-conference basketball player both his junior and senior years. He was also a 1965 graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne University with a B.A. in business administration.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, Eddie served in the 27th finance section with NATO/SHAPE in both Brussels and Chievres, Belgium, where he was an army accountant.

He retired from Corning Cable Systems with 30 years of service in accounting and management. An active member of St. Stephens Lutheran Church (Missouri Synod), he served the church in a number of capacities, including chairman of the congregation, elder, Bible study facilitator, and choir member. Many hours of service were spent coaching Little League baseball teams at St. Stephens Optimist with a win at the State Tournament in 1981. In addition to traveling (he was proud of visiting 49 states and a number of European countries with Doris and their annual trips to Hilton Head Island), woodworking and working in the yard were rewarding hobbies for him.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 57 years, Doris Sigmon Sigmon; daughter, Jeanna Sigmon Anderson (Kent); and son, Mitchell Sigmon (Molly Bass). In addition, his much loved grandchildren survive him: McKenzie Anderson of New York City, Morgan Anderson of Granite Falls, Jackson Sigmon and Gettys Sigmon of Hickory. Especially enjoyable for him was time spent with family and friends. Being extremely proud of each of his children and grandchildren, he attended all of their activities through the years.

Additional survivors include his three beloved sisters: Nancy Huffman of Hickory, Martha Drum (Ken Johnson) of Conover, and Susan Sigmon (Chip Shelby) of Pittsboro; sister-in-law, Jan Sigmon; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Steve L. Sigmon and Patty Thompson; along with a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins, all special to him.

A celebration of life service will be held Sunday, Oct. 9 (his birthday), at 3 p.m. at St. Stephens Lutheran Church (Mo. Synod), with Pastors David Ziehr and Shea Pennington officiating. Receiving of family and friends will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. at the church.

The family would like to thank the staff of CVMC and Trinity Ridge for their kindness and care during his stays there.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to be given to the Building Fund of St. Stephens Lutheran Church, 2304 Springs Rd., Hickory, NC 28601.

I worked for Eddie many years at Corning. He was the best person I ever knew. He took his job seriously sometimes too much. It was a pleasure to have known him. God bless each of you, my thoughts are with you. I will always miss him. He was super proud of his family, and always had kind words of others.
