Mr. Edwin Eugene Carmichael, 90, of Vale, passed away Sunday, Nov. 14, 2021, at Peak Resources Assisted Living, after a brief period of declining health.

Mr. Carmichael was born in High Point, Aug. 13, 1931, to the late Gurney Edwin Carmichael and Ornie Modlin Carmichael. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Frances M. Carmichael; and his loving wife, Peggy A. Carmichael, in 2020, after 66 years of marriage.

He is survived by a son, Edwin L. Carmichael and wife, Terrie, of the home; grandson, Garrett E. Carmichael and wife, Kayda; great-granddaughter, Ellie, all of Newton; sister, Peggy C. Condrey of Thomasville; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Carmichael attended Appalachian State Teachers College from 1950 to 1952, before enlisting in the U. S. Navy. He served in the Pacific during the Korean conflict first aboard the USS Salisbury Sound and later on board the USS Oriskany. He was well known in the Pacific Fleet for his prowess and efficiency as a radio operator. He was awarded the National Defense Service Ribbon, China Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal during his service. After his terms of service obligation ended in 1956, he was transferred to the U.S. Naval Reserve until 1960.

Mr. Carmichael worked for over 35 years in the transportation business, first with Murrow's Transfer, then as an Assistant Terminal manager with Youngblood Freight Lines in Kernersville, then as Terminal Manager for Youngblood in the Hickory area, and for 27 years as a Sales Representative for Carolina Freight Carriers in Conover.

After his retirement in 1993, he enjoyed serving in many capacities at First Presbyterian Church, in Newton, where he was an active member along with his wife, Peggy, for over 50 years. He especially enjoyed singing in the FPC choir.

A memorial service will be held Friday, Nov. 19, at 1 p.m., at First Presbyterian Church in the Chapel. The family will receive friends both before and after the service. Mr. Carmichael will be inurned in the Church columbarium.

It is with deep regret that I read of the passing of Mr. Carmichael. My father-in-law worked at Carolina Freight in Conover for many years during Ed's tenure there. I became acquainted with Ed while working as traffic manager with Century Furniture. My thoughts and prayers are with the Carmichael family.
