Frances Herman Porell

DAVIDSON - Frances Ellen Speagle Herman Porell, 71, of Davidson, formerly of Conover, passed away July 18, 2006, at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center in Mooresville. Born March 17, 1935, in Burke County, she was the daughter of the late James Frank Speagle and the late Phebie Downs Speagle. After graduating from Lenoir-Rhyne College, "Mrs. Herman" taught the gifted program at Newton-Conover City Schools. Later, she received her master's degree from Appalachian State University and retired from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System. Her last occupation was branch manager of Cabarrus Federal Credit Union. She enjoyed reading, writing, playing the piano, socializing and playing bridge, as well as traveling. In addition to her parents, her first husband, John Long Herman, preceded her in death. She is survived by a son, Mark S. Herman and wife, the Rev. Tamara B. Herman of O'Fallon, Mo.; a daughter, Rachel Dianne Herman of Huntersville; a grandson, John Marcus Herman of O'Fallon, Mo.; a granddaughter, Greta Rachel Herman of Huntersville; a brother, Ralph Speagle and wife, Gail; six sisters, Peggy Fox and husband, George, Polly Bradshaw and husband, William, Betty Harvey and husband, J.L., Dorothy Denniston and husband, Bob, Ruth Lutz and Irene Whisenant; and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held Friday, July 21, 2006, at 10 a.m. at Burke Mortuary Chapel in Newton. Burial will follow in Catawba Memorial Park in Hickory. The family will receive friends tonight, Thursday, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Burke Mortuary in Newton. Burke Mortuary in Newton is serving the Porell family.
