Gregory Brunt Obituary

Gregory Brunt

May 25, 1962 - September 9, 2025

Gregory Scott Brunt (63) celebrated life from May 25, 1962, until September 9, 2025. He was warmly welcomed by Jesus with open arms and joined his mother, Mary Calipari Brunt Metz, his father, Donald J. Brunt Sr, along with his stepfather, Doug W. Metz.

Greg was the best brother anyone could ask for and will be deeply missed by his seven siblings. He was a shining light to everyone that he engaged with in the community, whether you hung out with him at the "Center" (now the YMCA), Special Olympics, LR Bears or Crawdad baseball games. He loved to travel with family and has been on several cruises; he even visited Graceland and New York City with his church group. He loved swimming for Catawba County Special Olympics and won over 150 medals between 1973 and 2019. In fact, he was inducted into the Catawba County Sports Hall of Fame in 2018 for his swimming accolades. Greg loved all kinds of music, but he really loved listening to Elvis, Queen, and Gospel.

Greg spent his last years at Carolina Rehabilitation of Burke County and was always into any and all activities they offered. He was even their Santa for the last couple of Christmas celebrations. Everyone who worked with him said he was such a joy and was an honor to know. He was funny, warm, a happy-go-lucky guy who shared his smile with everyone. He enjoyed the simple things in life and led a long, meaningful life for a Down syndrome adult. He enjoyed life to the fullest and will be greatly missed by so many who had the privilege of knowing him.

Greg is survived by his loving siblings, Linda Brunt Deaton of Hendersonville, Theresa Brunt of Hickory, Donald J Brunt Jr. (Mary) of Granite Falls, Nancy Brunt St. John (Joel) of Whitsett, Clark A Brunt of Hickory, Robert V Brunt (Sherri) of Winder, GA, and Barbara Brunt Osborne (Lee) of Key West, Fla. Greg was blessed with many nieces and nephews, and they all loved visiting him when they could.

There will be a Celebration of Life on Saturday, November 22, 2025, from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Hickory YMCA - Co Miller Teen Center at 701 1st Street NW, Hickory, NC 28601.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that you donate graciously to Catawba County Special Olympics. For more details, please contact Teresa Bazzle at [email protected].

I went to school with Clark and was introduced to Greg at an early age. I loved d seeing him at The Center where he always hugged me and had a joke to tell. Always happy!! I know he will be missed by so many, but especially his family. Lifting you all up during this time.
