Horace Chapman Obituary

HICKORY - Horace Jacob Chapman, 86, of Hickory, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2007, at Palliative CareCenter & Hospice of Catawba Valley. Born Sept. 11, 1920, in Alexander County, he was the son of the late Peter T. Chapman and Rufinnie Brown Chapman. Mr. Chapman was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II and served in the Pacific. He was a member of Viewmont Baptist Church and was active in former churches in Silver Springs, Md., and Cape Coral, Fla. He was a gemologist and co-owner of a jewelry store in Rockville, Md., for 30 years. Mr. Chapman also was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Scottish Rite and Almas Shrine Temple in Alexandria, Va., and a member of the Bethlehem Ruritan Club. He was an avid gardener, loved golf, and especially enjoyed spending time with his friends and family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Marjorie Teague Chapman of the home; a brother, Laban Chapman of Kannapolis; two nieces, Ann C. Davis and husband, Tommy Davis, of Davidson and Nancy C. Hooper and husband, Peter Hooper, of Chesapeake Beach, Md.; and a number of local nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at Viewmont Baptist Church in Hickory on Friday, Jan. 19, 2007, at 11 a.m. and will be conducted by the Rev. Rick Jordan. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Honorary pallbearers will be members of The Master Workman Class. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Viewmont Baptist Church Building Fund, 1246 Second St., NE, Hickory, N.C. 28601 or Palliative CareCenter & Hospice of Catawba Valley, 3975 Robinson Road, Newton, N.C. 28658. Bass-Smith Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the family of Horace Jacob Chapman.

dear marge...

dave gray let me know about chappie's passing. i'm sorry to hear the news but i know that he had a long and happy life together with you. he was one of the truly good guys in this world and it would be a better place if there were more people like him. he'll be missed by a lot of people that he touched during his life. honore and i are thinking of you and extend our sincerest sympathies.
