Michael Beane Obituary

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Retired U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Michael J. Beane, 40, departed this life tragically on Thursday, March 23, 2006, as a result of a plane crash in Melbourne, Fla. Michael was born May 29, 1965, in Charlotte, N.C., but spent most of his formative years in Hickory, N.C. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in business administration from The Citadel in Charleston, S.C., and spent 22 years serving our country in the U.S. Navy. His passion for flying and this great country was superseded only by the love for his family. His love for his fellow man and his charismatic and gregarious nature resulted in a life blessed with an inordinate number of friends. Michael enlisted in the Navy in 1984 and was trained as a nuclear machinist mate for submarines. He served his first eight years aboard both nuclear ballistic and fast-attack submarines and participated in 13 submarine deterrent patrols. He was selected for the prestigious Enlisted Commissioning Program and earned his commission upon graduation from The Citadel in 1995. Michael adopted Jacksonville Beach, Fla., as his home when he arrived at Mayport, Fla., for his first officer assignment aboard the USS Vicksburg (CG 69), where he served for three years before joining the staff of DESRON 24. During these tours, he completed two extended deployments to the Mediterranean and one to the Persian Gulf. He was then transferred to Afloat Training Group Mayport, where he served as a training liaison officer and the Surface/Strike Department head. Michael then joined the USS Doyle (FFG 39) as a combat systems officer and operations officer, this time deploying to a Standing NATO Forces Atlantic Battle Group. His final tour in the Navy was as squadron operations officer in DESRON 14, also out of Mayport. Michael's love for aviation led him to his next career. He joined Craig Air Center, located at Craig Air Field in Jacksonville, Fla., as the assistant general manager. Though there for such a short time, Michael touched everyone with his enthusiasm and infectious good humor. He retired from the U.S. Navy in December 2005 and chose to continue pursuing his love for aviation in his next career when he joined Craig Air Center as the assistant general manager. Michael's family includes his loving wife, Diana; two daughters, Madison and Samantha; parents, Jerry and Judy Beane; brothers, Steven Beane and Mark Beane; and grandfather, R.J. Beane Sr. The funeral service for Lt. Cmdr. Beane will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 29, 2006, in Christ Episcopal Church, 400 San Juan Drive, Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. 32082. Military honors will follow. Friends and family are invited to a reception in the church courtyard following the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Michael's memory may be made to the Madison and Samantha Beane Education Fund, Wachovia Bank, Siesta Key Branch, 5810 Midnight Pass Road, Sarasota, Fla. 34242. Services are under the direction and care of Quinn-Shalz, A Family Funeral Home and Cremation Centre.

To the Beane Family,

I extend my sincerest sympathies in this trying time. Mike touched so many lives and truly enjoyed everything about it. I think often of the fun experiences we had together on VICKSBURGH and our many trips about the Southeast visiting family and friends, sky-diving, and just hangin out. He is a true friend and shipmate who will be missed.

Diana,

I realize there are no words that can fill the void you feel; yet today, I hope you are comforted by the immense love and prayers that surround you. We are all here, by your side, to support you as you feel the weight of the world on your shoulders. Please rest knowing that you are not alone. After losing my brother tragically and many other friends and peers over the years, I will not tell you the pain goes away; I will always remind you that it does get easier eventually. I will be by your side over the entire next year of "firsts" which are tough and I know, without question, when we sit here next year you'll still be beautiful and a lot stronger! Hang in there, we're all sending love your way every moment!

Love you,

Stacie, Neil and Baby Justin

Dear Diana and the Beane family,

I heard about the tragic death of Michael while on business in Brazil. I am a fellow pilot at the Craig Air Center and have known Michael for the past 6 months. He was an extremely kind and generous man and I enjoyed spending time with him. He flew with me in my Lancair once and we were planning to fly together often this spring and summer to Sarrasota where I have a home and I understand he has family. I had only known him a short time but was looking forward to deepening our friendship before this great loss. My heart goes out to you and the rest of the family. If there is anything I can do, please don't hesitate to ask.

Dear Dianna,

We are so sorry for your loss. We will miss Michael always making us laugh. We wish we could have got to know him better. A thought we always found encouraging is found at Revelation 21:4 that tells us that death, mourning and pain will be done away with. Our prayers are with you and your family. As well as love and support.

Sincerly,
