Norman Cook Obituary

LONG VIEW - The Honorable Mayor Norman E. Cook Sr. went to his heavenly home after a valiant battle with cancer Jan. 15, 2010, at Catawba Valley Medical Center. He will be missed by all. Born Aug. 17, 1943, in Fallston to the late Wade and Azalie Lynn Cook, he was a member of Oakland Heights Baptist Church. He was elected as an alderman of Long View in 1985 and assumed the position of mayor in 1989. He served as mayor of Long View until 2010. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Carol Brittain. He is survived by his wife, Della H. Cook of the home; one daughter, Brenda Killen of Hickory; one son, Norman Cook Jr. of Hickory; four brothers, Ray Cook, Ronnie Cook, Kenneth Cook and Johnny Cook, all of Burke County; two sisters, Kay Christopher and Robin Cook, both of Mountain View; and grandsons, Terry Icard and wife, Lindsay, and Edward Johnson Jr. and wife, Nicole, all of Hickory. The funeral service will be Monday, Jan. 18, 2010, at 1 p.m. at Winkler's Grove Baptist Church, with Pastor Dale Faulkenbury and Pastor Joel Cook officiating. Burial will follow in Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church from 12:30 to 1 p.m. The family will receive friends tonight, Sunday, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Bass-Smith Funeral Home. The Long View Board of Alderman, the town manager and the director of public works will serve as pallbearers. Memorials may be made to Oakland Heights Baptist Church, 808 11th St., NW, Hickory, N.C. 28601. Online condolences may be made to the Cook family at www.bass-smithfuneralhome.com.
