Paul Kanupp Obituary

Rev. Paul Kanupp

March 5, 1943 - July 18, 2025

Reverend Paul Robert Kanupp, 82, of Dallas, N.C., passed away unexpectedly on Friday, July 18, 2025, at Atrium Health in Charlotte.

Born in Catawba County on March 5, 1943, Paul was the son of the late E.E. and Clara Killian Kanupp. A man of deep faith and compassion, Paul dedicated his life to serving others through ministry and community service. He was a graduate of St. Stephens High School, Lenoir-Rhyne University, and Trinity Lutheran Seminary, where he earned a Master of Divinity degree.

Over the years, Paul faithfully served several Lutheran congregations, including St. Matthew's in Bowley's Quarters, MD; Miller's Lutheran in Hickory, NC; and Holy Communion in Dallas, NC. His calling also led him to hospital chaplaincy, where he provided comfort and guidance to countless individuals and families during critical moments. He was active on numerous church and community boards and committees, always offering his leadership with humility and grace.

Paul also had a passion for public service and spent time as both Chaplain and Firefighter with the Bowley's Quarters Volunteer Fire Department (Lifetime Member) in Maryland and later as a Firefighter with the Town of Dallas Volunteer Fire Department.

A devoted sports fan, Paul was especially loyal to his beloved Carolina Tar Heels. He enjoyed a good round of golf-playing with his pastors' group in Maryland and continuing the tradition well into retirement. However, his greatest joy came from time spent with his grandchildren. Whether attending school events, church plays, sports games-or simply sharing a quiet visit-Paul cherished every moment with them.

In addition to his parents, Paul was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Abigail Kanupp; sisters, Imogene Hefner and Ruth Burrus; niece, Beth Bedington; and nephews, Andy Burrus and Scott Hefner.

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Linda Propst Kanupp; sons, Matt Kanupp and wife Mendy of Dallas, N.C., and Jeff Kanupp and wife Clara of Conover, N.C.; grandchildren, Kayla, McKenzie, Grace, Camden, and Blake; sister-in-law, Jane Propst of Clemmons, N.C.; and his cherished nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 24, 2025, at 1 p.m. at Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, with Rev. Dr. Deborah L. Frye and Rev. Dr. John H. Spencer officiating. Visitation will follow the service in the church Fellowship Hall. A private burial will be held at the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to:
