Suzanne Jeffers Obituary

HICKORY - Suzanne Kramer Jeffers, Ph.D., passed away July 3, 2009, at her home with her family. She was born in New York, N.Y., on March 12, 1929, to Theodore Roosevelt (Ted) Kramer Sr. and Estelle Ullmann Kramer. She was a resident of Hickory for more than 70 years. A respected educator, Dr. Jeffers retired as professor emeritus from Lenoir-Rhyne University after a distinguished 40-year career in the English department. She was a popular teacher and influential Shakespearean scholar. Among her many honors at Lenoir-Rhyne, she was named the Raymond M. Bost Distinguished Professor, was a yearbook dedicate, a commencement speaker and was included in Who's Who of American Teachers and Professors. She was affectionately known by her students as "Doctor J." At her retirement, colleagues planted a tree in her name in the university's quad. After attending Hickory High School, she graduated from Bryn Mawr College. That began a lifelong love for learning and her long support as a college class collector. Following her college graduation in 1951, she joined New York's Doubleday and Co. in the Children's Book Division. While there, she was given the galley proofs of "The Diary of Anne Frank." After an all-night read, she urged the publisher to issue it as an adult book. She delighted in the opportunity to meet Otto Frank, Anne's father, during the publishing process. In 1953, she returned to Carolina and to UNC-Chapel Hill for a master's degree in English and theater. She met her husband Charles (Jeff) there. Twenty-five years later, she returned to UNC-Chapel Hill for a doctorate in Shakespearean studies. After her marriage to Charles in 1956, and his military stint, they returned to Hickory in 1957. During the following years, she was active on the vestry of the Church of the Ascension, served on local boards, most recently the Beaver Library Board. She was a member of The Travelers, Ladies of the Club and Quest Book Clubs. In 2004, she and Jeff were given the Outstanding Community Service Award by the board of trustees of Lenoir-Rhyne University. She also was an accomplished actress and comedienne, appearing in numerous roles on local stages. They ranged from Charles Shultz's "Lucy" in "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown" to Tennessee Williams' anguished mother Amanda Wingfield in "The Glass Menagerie." She appeared last in 2000 with her husband in the Hickory Community Theatre production "On Golden Pond." She is survived by her husband, Charles E. Jeffers, and daughters and son-in-law, Tina and Mitchell Batson and Ellie and Brian Hall. Her grandchildren are Zackary and Sarah Johnson, Julia and Will Batson and Kelsey and Taylor Hall. Her family is grateful for the support of Douglas and Valerie Johnson. She also is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Capt. Theodore Roosevelt Kramer Jr. (USN Ret.) and Dorothy Wentz Kramer, and nieces and nephews, Ted and Doreen Kramer, Kathy and Steve Watts and Chuck and Kieran Kramer. Great-nieces and great-nephews abound. The funeral will be held Tuesday, July 7, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Church of the Ascension, 726 First Ave., NW, Hickory. The family will receive after the service at a reception in the Parish Hall. Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers are suggested for the Dr. Suzanne K. Jeffers Memorial Fund at Lenoir-Rhyne University, c/o Rich Duncan, L-R, Box 7150 , Hickory, N.C. 28603 or Palliative CareCenter & Hospice of Catawba Valley, 3975 Robinson Road, Newton, N.C. 28658. The family also would greatly appreciate a donation of a household item to the Habitat for Humanity Home Store, 772 4th St., SW, Hickory, N.C. Bass-Smith Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the Suzanne Kramer Jeffers family.

I am late but I have arrived. Think of the impact. Years have passed but I remember her and she still speaks to me. I love her. She still lives in me. Thank you!

What a bright light she and Jeff were during our teenage years and introduction to community theatre. We loved them dearly, and I am so grateful that Neill Clark and I were able to visit last September 2008.
Suzie was a force of life who infused that energy and belief into so many of us, and we are so grateful..

Dear Jeff,

I found out about Suzanne a week after she died. I so sorry. I know she will be greatly missed. I still remember "THE Boyfriend" in which I had the lead, and the beautiful costumes she made for me. God bless you and help you through this time of sorrow. Love, Dot Pickett Ramsour

Dear Mr. Jeffers and family,
I am very saddened to hear of your loss and wanted to extend my heartfelt sympathy. Years ago, as a new and very inexperienced actress at HCT, I will never forget a particular evening -- after watching my rehearsal in the Fireman's Kitchen, Mrs. Jeffers made a point of complimenting my performance, which meant the world to me, especially then. I will always remember her extraordinary grace. May you also find peace in her memory.

How sad it was to receive a call from my niece in Hickory telling me about Suzie's passing. She was One of A Kind! We were in Hickory High together and were in the same little "group". She always entertained us at slumber parties after her families trips to New York. She knew all the songs and plays. We have been in contact over the years and she has always been special to me. My prayers are with you, Jeff and all the family.

With sadness, I recall the warm memories of how Suzie, your family and the Kramers “took us in” when we moved to Hickory in 1970. I loved her smile, enthusiasm and ability to make others feel happy. We’re sorry for your loss.
Love,

It was a very special privilege to know Suzie. She was a wonderful, joyful person who inspired this amateur to renew his interest in Shakespeare and to tease her regularly about whether Edward DeVere might perhaps have been the real Shakespeare--just for the sheer pleasure of watching her good hearted "outrage" at the very suggestion. How delighted must those who have gone before us be to have her in their midst. Her family is in my thoughts and prayers at this sad time.

Every time Betsy and I went to the YMCA, and met Susie there, was a good time. No matter what was going on in her life, she was invariably upbeat, cheerful and caring. She made the world a better place and she will be dearly missed.

I am an 1985 English major from LR. I took many classes with Mrs. Jeffers and she was so adorable. I am away at this time on vacation and just received this sad news. I send my deepest sympathy to the Jeffers family. I learned so much from her and took that knowledge with me throughout my 25 years of teaching English.

What a wonderful woman Suzie was! She and Barbara Herman made me feel welcome as a new faculty member at Lenoir-Rhyne back in the '80s as we met for lunch and talked about everything under the sun! She was always so interested in others, and able to get a laugh out of any situation. When she retired, she was pleased to have a beech tree of the Riversii variety (purple beech) planted in her honor, since that was the name of her Shakespeare folio. I have enjoyed meeting Tina and grandchildren in the years since when she has visited campus. She surely did adore her family. I will miss her dearly

Dr. Jeffers was one of the most gifted professors to ever grace Lenoir Rhyne. Although I only attended one of her classes, I was truly touched and blessed to have known her at all. So full of life, love and the passion for art she shared with her students was nothing short of amazing. She will be missed in so many ways. Heaven will never be the same...God Bless!

I first met Suzie in 1976 while working Summer Theatre at L-R. I was lucky enough to see her and Jeff perform together in a memorable production of "I DO! I DO!". When I began attending graduate school at UNC a couple of years later, Suzie was almost the first person I ran into in the Wilson Library. What a pleasant surprise! Her kindness and friendship helped ease my transition into a new and strange world. She was a gem! Funny, loving, talented, warm, and supportive are just a few of the adjectives that describe Suzie. She passed many of her finest qualities to her wonderful family. God bless all of you! Suzie will always be with those who knew her.

The Jeffers were the first to offer me kindness and a creative home when I moved to Hickory from Asheville. I had the pleasure of taking one of Suzie's Shakespeare workshops. I fell in love with her mirth and soon after was taken in as HCT's first education director by Charles and Tina. I loved my time there with them. I even met my Irish husband poet Adrian Rice through HCT and the Jeffers! Much love and blessings to the family. Suzie was nothing short of magic. She will be sorely missed.

Suzanne was my favorite professor at LR back in the 60's. She was not only a wonderful teacher, but one who gave strength and support to her students as they tried to decide just what they really wanted to be when they grew up. I am a stronger woman because of her. The family will be in my prayers.

We have lost a rare person. Suzie had the gifts of grace, wit, and the ability to make each person she encountered feel special and loved - like we were unique and dear to her - each and every time we saw her. She gave me a light inside to carry forward, and I am grateful for her life.

I was in the Bear Marketeers with Suzy. She was always kind, genuine and friendly, even though I was a newcomer. She would sometimes stop by the office just to say hello, even though she had already retired by the time I met her. I was fortunate to have known such a lovely person.

The first time I ever met Suzie/Suzy Jeffers she had every right to have every bit of limelight and spotlight in the room! But she made me the center of her attention and made me feel like I was the most important person she met that night. I asked her if she was a Suzie with an "ie" or a Suzy with a "y". She said "Oh My Dear, it doesn't really matter, as long as you call me, and often!" I made it a point from that day forward to never to try to check. She was the most humble, gracious, witty, sparkling, giant. What a gift to have known her! Jeff, Tina and family, you have our most sincere prayers and love.

What can I say? Suzy was well-loved by all. I first met her when I joined the Lenoir-Rhyne faculty in 1987, and I was impressed to discover just how much her students admired her. A highlight was celebrating her 70th birthday with her and a group of LR friends in Portugal while on a spring break trip. She and Jeff have contributed so much to the community and Suzy will be greatly missed. Jeff: Carol and I want to extend our deepest sympathy for your (and everyone's) loss.

Suzy was my colleague and good friend. She taught me the value of mirth, an area in which she was an artist. Her wonderful stories and keen wit, combined with an impish twinkle in the eye, brought joy--and perspective--to every shared occasion. And she knew the value of a good chocolate dessert in the middle of the day! She demanded excellence from all her students ("Show me your thesis!" would ring out in the halls of Rhyne Building ten times a day on conference days). Yet students always seemed to leave her office with a smile on their face. Suzy blessed many, many lives, including mine, and I will miss her sorely.

Dr. Jeffers may have been small in stature, but she was one powerful little lady. I was fortunate to have a class in Shakespeare with her and she was an awesome professor. Hickory, Lenoir-Rhyne, and I have been blessed by her presence. Please accept my condolences. Marta Strong
