Timothy Lutz Obituary

Timothy "Tim" Allen Lutz of Alexandria, VA passed away peacefully on July 10, at 75 years of age. He was born June 12, 1948, in Canton, Ohio to the late Glenn and Jane (Myers) Lutz. Tim received his Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from Baldwin Wallace College, and Master's Degree in Music from George Washington University. Beginning his 42-year educator career in the Alexandria City Public Schools in 1970, he served as director of Elementary bands, founding director of the Alexandria All-City Band, and the High School Director for Symphonic, Jazz, Pit Orchestra, and Marching bands.

With trombone as his specialty, he performed in the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra, and donated his musical gifts to performing for church services and various ensembles. Becoming a Lutheran through marriage to his late wife Ginger, he was an active member of St Mark's Lutheran Church in Springfield, VA. He lived out his faith by supporting Lutheran Marriage Encounter, St. Mark's Sunday School, serving on and was President of the church council, and a member of the bell choir.

As a dedicated father and family man who supported the activities of his wife, sons, and grandchildren, he made time to visit and foster special relationships with distant family and friends. He was especially known for his humor and ability to make others laugh with his puns, "dad-jokes," and Donald Duck impressions.

Being a lung transplant recipient during his final years, his life was improved and extended to enjoy time with his family and friends, and continue to share his gifts. Our family wishes to express our heartfelt appreciation for the kindness and care our father received from the INOVA Fairfax medical staff over the past four years.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Virginia "Ginger" Speagle Lutz, and brother Phillip Lutz. He is survived by his two sons, Allen (Melissa & 1 grandchild) and Matthew (Katherine & 3 grandchildren), and sister-in-law Wilma Lutz.

Memorial Service will be held Saturday, July 22, at 2:00 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Hickory, NC. I forgot to add one other thing. Mr. Lutz played in the Alexandria Symphony, and one time he said to me "If you want to hear a good piece played by a not-so-good orchestra, come to the concert Sunday afternoon." The piece was Franz Liszt's "Faust Symphony" which became a favorite of mine. And I didn't think the orchestra was bad at all.

In high school, about 1973 I played trombone in the pit orchestra for the school musical that year, "Cabaret." Mr. Lutz conducted the pit orchestra, and the show was ambitious for a high school to say the least, but he pulled us all together and we did okay. I remember at one performance, the cast gestured to the orchestra pit for us to stand, but we had all agreed to stay seated and let Mr. Lutz take all the applause, which he deserved. A good man, and it seems that he had a good life.
