Charles Danner Obituary

Charles Alan Danner, of Shady Acres, passed away on November 7, 2023, at the age of 82.

Charles was a true life-long learner, his passion for knowledge beginning at an early age. Growing up in Leakey, Texas, he was driving a car at 14, flying airplanes at 17, and had earned his Eagle Scout rank before graduating as the salutatorian of his class at Leakey High School. After earning his degree in 3 years from Trinity University, San Antonio, he proceeded to the University of Texas Dental School in Houston. He then attended the University of Texas Medical School at Galveston, earning his medical degree. While a practicing anesthesiologist he graduated from the South Texas College of Law in Houston. While attending law school, he and his good friend Bob Crowder pursued Master Chef classes.

After retiring from his medical practice, Charles served as Executive Chef at a number of restaurants, including Meadowlakes Country Club, Marble Falls, and Tropical Hideaway, Granite Shoals. The Hawaiian luaus he hosted at Tropical Hideaway, complete with hula dancers and pit-roasted pigs, were legendary. Charles and his wife Diane enjoyed traveling the world, particularly Europe, southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands. Charles was a HAM radio enthusiast as a kid and rediscovered his interest later in life. He was a member of the Highland Lakes Amateur Radio Club.

Charles is survived by his wife of 46 years, Diane Wimberly Danner, his sister Jane Van Hoozer, nieces Mandy Van Hoozer and Bonnie Harker (Steven), nephew Kyle Van Hoozer (Chas), great-niece Grace, and great-nephew Riley. Charles was preceded in death by Rusty Doggie Danner, who we know was eagerly waiting to greet him at the Rainbow Bridge.

A celebration of Charles's life will be held in January.

In lieu of flowers, consider a memorial contribution to the Living Grace Canine Ranch in Bertram, a place where Charles enjoyed spending time with the senior dogs who call it home.

I was a fellow HAM with Charles and tremendously enjoyed his company. He was in my experience a kind and gentle soul. The description of his life-long learning was certainly the case when we were together tinkering with radio stuff. He is missed.

Dr. Danner's kindness and compassion were a blessing to all he encountered. It's often stated that a dog can sense a human's essence; based on wagging silver-tipped tails, surely Dr. Danner was an angel within our midst.
