Christopher Coates Obituary

Christopher David Coates, age 47, passed away unexpectedly on October 8, 2025, in Logan, Utah. He was born on June 29, 1978, in Brigham City, Utah, to Max and Cathy Coates, the second of eight children.

Chris grew up in Logan and was known for his spunky spirit, sense of humor, kindness, empathy, and compassion. He brought joy to everyone who knew him and lived life with courage, laughter, sarcasm, and love. He faced life with humor and quiet resilience as he lived with Costello Syndrome, a rare genetic condition. His life was an honored gift to his family and to all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Chris attended Woodruff Elementary School and Mount Logan Middle School. He graduated from Logan High School in 2000 and continued in the school's post-secondary special education program for four more years. For the past 25+ years, he attended the Cache Employment and Training Center. Over the years, he had many friends, peer tutors, aides, and staff who made a lasting impact on his life.

Chris was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He enjoyed participating in scouting, youth, and priesthood activities in his younger years. As an adult, he attended the Logan LDS Institute, where he developed many close friendships and had wonderful experiences.

Chris loved music, movies, TV shows, comics, and video games. It would be impossible to name all of the shows, books, and characters that Chris enjoyed, but some stand out. He loved listening to The Beach Boys, Elvis Presley, and the music from Grease. His favorite tv shows were Dukes of Hazard, Walker Texas Ranger, Night Rider, Happy Days, and The Big Bang Theory. He loved Stars Wars, Indiana Jones, and comic book characters like Superman, Batman, and The Incredible Hulk. His favorite Superman was Christopher Reeves and his favorite Batman was Michael Keaton. He got to meet two of his heroes: Chuck Norris, and Henry Winkler! He was always ready to show off his Pokemon cards or PEZ dispensers. He loved "Taco Tuesdays" and never missed nachos on Sunday evenings. Chris was affectionately referred to as "chick magnet" by his uncle. He will be remembered for his quick wit, warm smile, exceptional memory, and his ability to make everyone around him laugh.

Chris is survived by his parents, Max and Cathy Coates of Millville, Utah; his siblings: Chad Coates (Millville, UT); Nick Coates (Millville, UT); Becky (Russell) Winn (Smithfield, UT); Matthew Coates (Logan, UT); Heather (Jake) Hamblin (Salt Lake City, UT); and Jennifer (Tanner) Brown (Sandy, UT). Chris was a very proud uncle to Jaidance Anderson and Max Christopher Hamblin. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, and cousins who loved him dearly. He was preceded in death by his sister, Michelle.

A viewing and visitation will be held on Thursday, October 16, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Allen-Hall Mortuary in Logan, Utah. Chris's life will be further celebrated on Friday, October 17, with a viewing from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m., followed by funeral services at 11:00 a.m. at the Providence South Stake Center (360 E. 450 N., Millville, Utah). Interment will be at the Logan City Cemetery, with a dedication of the grave at 2:00 pm, following the funeral service.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Costello Syndrome Family Network on Chris' behalf to support families navigating the challenges of Costello Syndrome.
