Don Huber Obituary

Don Alma Huber, 89, passed away on September 8, 2024, in North Logan, Utah. He was born on April 1, 1935, in Midway, Utah, to Alma and Nettie Smith Huber, the second of five children. Growing up on a dairy farm, he learned to love animals and farm life. He received his education at Midway Elementary and Wasatch High School. After graduating from high school, he attended Utah State Agricultural College.

In 1956, Don was called to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the West Central States Mission, spending most of his time in Western Montana, the Black Hills of South Dakota, and the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. After completing his mission, he returned to Utah State University, where he completed BS and MS degrees in Agricultural Economics.

After graduation, he received a commission as an officer in the US Army, receiving officer training at Fort Benning Infantry Officers' School and at Fort Carson, Colorado, followed by service on active duty for six months and an additional seven and a half years in the Utah National Guard.

In 1961, Don was hired as the Utah State University Extension agent for Washington County, Utah. While in this position, he worked closely with the farmers, fruit growers, and ranchers and led the county 4-H program.

Washington County held a special place in Don's heart, because while living there he met the love of his life, Arlene Nuttall. They were married in the St. George Temple on July 20, 1963 and were blessed with five children. Don felt his greatest accomplishments in life were his marriage and his posterity.

In 1978, Don was transferred to Logan, Utah, to be the USU Extension Agent for Cache County. During his 22 years in this position, he wrote a weekly column for The Herald Journal and conducted home gardening seminars. He held workshops encouraging dairy farmers to balance rations and test feeds for their herds. He helped start the conservation field day for local school children and the Logan Farmers' Market.

In his later years, he loved spending time with his family and telling stories. Christmas was never complete without his childhood story about his Christmas Eve bath being interrupted by Santa. Don also loved taking his family members to visit the area that had been his family farm in Midway, Utah, which is now part of Wasatch Mountain State Park and Golf Course.

Don was active in his church, serving in many positions. He and his wife served as missionaries at the Washington D.C. Temple Visitors' Center, as service missionaries teaching English in Cache Valley, and as ordinance workers in the Logan Temple.

Don is survived by his wife, Arlene Nuttall Huber and their children, Jana Kaye (Wesley) James, Paula (Darwin) Davis, JoAnn Huber, Brenda (Burns) Israelsen, and Craig (Summer) Huber. He is also survived by his siblings, Edith Young, Annette Giles, and Mark Huber, along with 23 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Douglas Huber.

A viewing will be held on Friday, September 20, 2024, 6:00-8:00 pm, at the Allen Mortuary located at 420 E 1800 N, North Logan, Utah.
