Gary Etherington Obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Gary Etherington, our beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, who died peacefully on November 11, 2024, at the age of 70.

Son of Carol Taylor and Jack Etherington, he was born on April 14, 1954 in Payson, Utah. He attended Payson High School where he was on the 1971 Utah State Champion football team and graduated in 1972. He attended Utah Technical College in Provo, Utah and after graduating went to work for a large computer company in Salt Lake City. There he was introduced to Susan Jacobsen, who he threw, fully clothed, into the swimming pool at their first meeting. They were married six months later in the Salt Lake Temple. He moved to Logan in 1979 where he continued to work in the IT field. He started P.C. Doctor, a personal computer repair business, in 1987 and then went to work full time for Bridgerland Applied Technology College in 1992. He retired from BATC in 2016. His first project after retirement was making a cedar canoe from scratch, a project that took him over a year.

Gary was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Throughout his life, he held various callings within the church including Bishop, Elders Quorum President and Temple Officiator. He and Susan were called on two missions to the Nauvoo Temple, one was cancelled by Covid and the other due to illness. His faith was evident in the quiet ways he lived his life - showing kindness, offering counsel, and sharing his belief in Christ through everyday acts of service.

Gary was an avid outdoorsman. His love for hunting and fishing was a central part of his life. He loved fishing with Susan even though she always reeled in the bigger fish. He hunted in Alaksa, Canada and Utah with friends and family. In addition to his outdoor passions, Gary was a master of custom knife making. He found joy in creating, and his knives are treasured by those who have the privilege of owning them.

Perhaps one of Gary's most beloved hobbies was sourdough bread baking. He became known for his homemade sourdough loaves, which were a staple at home and a treat for friends and family. He taught many the art of sourdough making and his starter will live on with those that he taught.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Carol. He is survived by his wife, Susan, his children, Linsey, Kurt (Ann), Neil (Amanda) and Jack, his grandchildren, Kayla, Tyler, Carter, Max, Jackson, Halle and Drew, his father, Jack and his siblings, Mark, Lori, Kelly and Ryan.

Gary will live on in the stories, traditions and memories he leaves behind. He loved deeply, worked with purpose, and cherished every moment with his family. We miss him terribly.

A viewing will be held on November 15th from 6-8pm at Allen-Hall Mortuary. A graveside service will be held November 16th at 1pm.

In lieu of flowers, take a moment to do something kind for someone in your life. Tell your family you love them.

I was a classmate and friend of Gary´s in Payson. It seems like just yesterday that we were sitting in class, goofing off in the hallways or working hard, under coach Durrant and our teammates, out on the football field. Off the field, it sounds like all that hard work in seminary paid off too. His spirituality was just as infective then as it appears it was for his entire life. He was an amazing person, in every respect then and it is abundantly clear that he remained that way. He and his brother Mark, were the kind of guys you always wanted in your corner. Gary was one of the rare "Great Ones". He has left an amazing legacy. Just like anyone else whose life he may have touched, I feel lucky and blessed to have known him, even for just those few years.
