Our beloved mother, grandmother, neighbor, and friend, Janet Pond Mecham, passed away peacefully in Logan, Utah, on August 28, 2025, surrounded by her family. She was 92 years old.
Janet Pond Mecham was born on February 2, 1933, in Logan, Utah, to Alma Levier Pond and Margaret (Thomas) Pond. She grew up in Thatcher, Idaho, with her three sisters: Carolyn, Francis, and Alma Lynne. She developed skills of hard work and patience by working on the family ranch. She loved laboring alongside her father, hauling hay and working with cattle. Her father called her the "best hired hand a rancher could ever have." Janet attended Grace High School through her sophomore year.
Later in her teens, the Pond family moved to Logan, Utah, where Janet attended and graduated from Logan High School in 1950. She then enrolled at Utah State University, where she met her future husband, Melvin Everett Mecham. Janet and Mel married in the Logan Utah Temple on June 12, 1952 and shared 66 years of married life together. Mel passed away in 2018. Their marriage was blessed with four children: Michelle, Shawn, Allen, and Marja.
Janet and Mel lived in many parts of the world during Mel's 22-year career with the United States Air Force. They eventually settled in Logan, Utah in 1977. She and Mel also served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Sydney, Australia, from 1995 to 1997.
Janet worked at Utah State University for many years in various capacities as an administrative assistant. Her longest work assignment was at the Merrill Library on campus.
Janet was a kind friend and a gracious host. Family, neighbors, and friends have many memories of Janet's warm hospitality over the years. She was so generous and shared her time and resources. She was active in many social circles and gave service in those venues as well. She had a wonderful sense of humor and a keen wit. She was cheerful to the very end of her life.
Janet was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, faithfully serving in many capacities. She was a disciple of Jesus Christ, and this gave her the confidence and power she needed to live an exemplary life. She quietly went about helping her family and neighbors, giving service to all who came under her influence. One of Janet's many qualities was her loyalty to God, family, friends, and country.
Janet is survived by her four children: Michelle (Chris Daines) of North Logan, Utah; Shawn (Teresa Reyes) of College Station, Texas; Allen (Sandy Smellie) of North Logan, Utah; and Marja (Greg Bagley) of North Logan, Utah. She also leaves behind 18 grandchildren and 46 great-grandchildren. Janet is survived by her sister, Fran (Ernie Westover).
She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Melanie Mecham (twin sister to Michelle), sisters Carolyn Rollins and Lynne Cummings, and granddaughter Christina Daines.
Funeral services will be held on September 6, 2025 at 12:00 p.m. (noon) at Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center Street, Logan, Utah. A viewing will also be on September 6 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., prior to the funeral service. Interment will be in the Logan City Cemetery.
