Kathryn Shaffer Obituary
September 18, 1944 - June 24, 2017
Kathryn (Kathy) Spendlove Shaffer, 73, who lived a very active, loving life, was born in Seattle, WA, on Sept. 18, 1944. She passed thru the veil at her home after a long illness Saturday, June 24, 2017, with her loving husband Gary at her side. He had been a wonderful, dedicated care giver to her thru her illness.
She met Gary Shaffer, a professor of archeology, while he was teaching at Scottsdale Community College. They raised six children: Jeff Brown, Wendy Brown, Martin Jones, Michelle Spendlove Leet, Adrienne Shaffer and Garrison Shaffer. Gary and Kathy were sealed to each other for all of time and eternity in the Mesa Arizona LDS Temple.
Kathy earned an A.A. degree at Scottsdale Community College and a B.A. in business finance from Arizona State University. She and Gary were both very active members of the LDS Church, where she served as a teacher in the Primary, YW, SS and RS, and she was an RS president several times. This dear lady gave loving service to all throughout her life. She also performed in the Professional Master Works Choir, where they sang at Carnegie Hall in New York City.
They moved from Scottsdale, AZ, to Hyrum, UT, in 2006.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Dr. George Arthur and Flora VaLear Stevens Spendlove, her sweet daughter, Michelle Spendlove Leet, and her siblings, Steven Arthur Spendlove and Judith Ann Spendlove Fitzgerald. She is survived by her sister, Carole Spendlove Jewkes, children, Jeffery Brown, Wendy Brown, Martin Jones, Adrien Shaffer, Garrison Shaffer, and six precious grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Nyman Funeral Home. The viewings will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, June 29, at the Hyrum North Stake, Hyrum 16th Ward, located at 176 S. 1300 East, Hyrum, UT; and from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., prior to the Funeral services at noon Friday, June 30, 2017. Interment will follow at Millville, UT, Cemetery. Condolences and memories can be shared with the family online at www.NymanFH.com.
