John Vandermyde Obituary
John was born October 20, 1932, in Riverdale, Illinois, to John and Ruth (Johnson) Vandermyde. John served his country during the Korean Conflict in the U.S. Army. John was a longtime member of the American Legion and the D.A.V. Holland Post. He found the love of his life Joyce Marie Walters and they married on May 20, 1953. John worked at GE for 32 years, served on the Zeeland Township Fire Department, and worked hard on the family farm. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother and sister-in-law Leonard and Beverly Vandermyde, brother-in-law Eugene Vruggink.
John is survived by his wife of 64 years, Joyce, their children: Scott and Sheryl Vandermyde of Zeeland, John and Shari Vandermyde of Zeeland, Max and Jan Vandermyde of Zeeland; 9 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, his sister Jane Vruggink, and many extended family and friends.
A funeral service with military honors will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, October 7, 2017, at Hudsonville Reformed Church, 3950 Highland Drive, Hudsonville 49426. Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 pm, Friday at Yntema Funeral Home, 251 S. State Street, Zeeland 49464. Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to Zeeland Twp. Fire Department.

Aunt Joyce,
I have wonderful memories of Uncle John. You and Uncle John had the best marriage. You know how people introduce each other as the better half. Well you were both the better half. I remember going to your house after Scott had the first grandchild and Uncle John had built a toy house that filled the entire bedroom. I am sorry that I can not be at the service but please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and my cousins. Love you!

I have many great memories of "The Mayor" holding court at Country Corners. I also fondly remember the hospitality offered at the cottage for a bunch of kids on summer weekends. My prayers and sympathies to all of you.

Aunt Joyce, My heart aches for you today. You and Uncle John had a special love. I will miss him. He shared so much with me through the years. Different tidbits of knowledge. I always say he was my second dad. He taught me so much and never turned me away when I asked questions or bugged him. I pray that you and the boys can feel the love around you at this time.
