Samuel Vriezema Obituary

On Saturday, March 3rd, Samuel W. Vriezema, passed away from a glioblastoma at the age of 46. Sam will forever be remembered by his wife Kathy, and their precious children, Stephan, Karlee, Brendan and Erin, his mother Vi, his brothers and sisters Steve (Marylou) Vriezema, Sue Swanson, Sandy (Dick) Baarda, Scott Vriezema (Brian), mother-in-law Carol Hordyk, sisters-in-law Jennifer (Brett) Terpstra, Susie Poliski, and Debbie (Claire) Larson. Sam will also forever be remembered by his numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends.
Sam grew-up in Cedar Spring, Michigan with a passion for basketball, golf, a love of clean cars and as a fan of the Detroit Tigers, Lions and Pistons. After graduating from Ferris State University, Sam married Kathy, his high school sweetheart. Shortly after becoming a financial advisor for Edward Jones, Sam & Kathy moved to Zeeland to start an Edward Jones office where for 18 years Sam served and cared for his clients. He loved being a part of the Zeeland Community and an Elder at Community Reformed Church in Zeeland.
Whether it was bleachers, a sideline or a folding chair, watching his children was something he cherished. His support of their dreams on a stage, a volleyball court or a baseball diamond was where Sam spent a lot of hours smiling and cheering. He was a dad who was always a number one fan, adding jokes, and life lessons to every moment.
Sam has been reunited with his Dad, Bob, who passed away fifteen years ago and instilled within Sam his incredible sense of humor.
The family will greet friends Wednesday 5 – 8 p.m., Thursday 1 – 3 and 5 – 8 p.m. at Community Reformed Church, 10376 Felch Street, Zeeland. A Celebration of Sam's life will be held on Friday, March 16, at 2:00 p.m., also at Community Reformed Church, Zeeland.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Community Reformed Church, Zeeland or the GR Community Foundation WM Edward Jones Fund. www.yntemafh.com

I had the pleasure of meeting Sam in his Edward Jones office in 2013, and working with him and his great branch team in years following. He was a respected leader, top Edward Jones Financial Advisor, and trusted friend.

I am so very sorry to Sam's family, to his clients and his Edward Jones family for this tremendous loss. He will be missed by many.

We had the pleasure to get to know Sam because of his involvement with the Zeeland Education Foundation. He was always a beacon of light at a meeting with his smile, good humor, and thoughtful comments. However, in a very respectful way, Sam was not afraid to hold his own when he did not agree! He will be missed!

What a special man to be taken so early. Our love and support go out to you Kathy and the family. I remember Sam when he first joined the Cedar Springs golf team as a Freshman to complete the team for Varsity(golf wasn't very popular in the mid 80's in high school). :-) I remember his infectious smile and the ability to make a dark day bright. I lost touch with Sam after I joined the Navy but talk with him again a few years ago when Kathy's Dad passed. I was so good to see him again at that time. Marcia and I are so sorry for your loss bu we all know God has another new journey for him. God Bless

Kathy and family, having worked as a consultant to Edward Jones for a dozen years, if there was one advisor I would choose to spend a day with, and only one, for business or pleasure, it would be Sam. As others will tell you, I felt better and happier when Sam was there. Few people in my life have that distinction. Sam made others feel good about themselves and about life. He served joyfully. He knew he could make a difference in other people's lives. And he expected nothing in return. May you always know how much he was loved and admired. How much he loved his family. And what a positive influence he was as a mentor to this colleagues. May God protect and bless you.

We (Tim and I) is glad he is not suffering anymore. Prayers to the rest of the family.
