Tyler was a student in my German class last fall. He had to officially withdraw because of his course load but continued to audit the class. He was very interested in his German heritage and told me stories and asked questions regarding where his ancestors are from. He showed up with a big smile on his face just about every day and made it clear he really wanted to learn. I will remember his laugh with the twinkle in his eye. My deepest condolences.

Last semester, I had the pleasure of instructing Tyler in the lab section of introductory mechanics. I remember distinctly his desire to learn, not driven by external motivators, but pure curiosity. He challenged me to seek out explanations for physical phenomenon beyond those I knew from my past education. The math was not enough. What does it mean physically for the angular momentum to change as a gyroscope precesses? How is this horizontal motion caused by a downward force? Essentially, his questions caused me to think about the problem deeper. In this way, I learned from him. I am glad to have gotten the chance to know him, and my thoughts are with those close to him.
