He attended county school Hartford #7 until 3rd grade, then graduated from HLV in 1960. He proudly served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War on a cargo supply ship as a fire control technician. He especially enjoyed joining his brother Eugene in Colorado to hunt elk. When he could no longer hunt, he enjoyed trout fishing. He enjoyed collecting railroad memorabilia.

He and Bette enjoyed taking bus trips and road trips to find a new trout stream or visiting the Freedom Rocks throughout Iowa. In 2024, he went on the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight with Susan. He was a member of the Victor Legion and Victor United Methodist Church.
