Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you during a very difficult time for your family. I did not have the pleasure of knowing Alan for as long a time as many, but you can be sure of this, he had to be a great man to raise such wonderful children. There a many good memories for your family, keep those close to your heart. God Bless you all.

Dear Van Nort Family

My name is Houshyar Moarefi, and I was associated with Alan through business. In 1990’s, when I first met Alan, I was impressed with his professionalism, positive attitude and knowledge. Over the years, as we became friends I learned that his enthusiasm goes beyond his work. I found him to be proud of his family. He was an honorable man. His character was strong, and his soul was gentle. It is certain that he will be remembered well by all who knew him.

I did not learn about Alan’s illness until recent weeks. I am saddened that I did not have the opportunity to check on him while he was being treated. I regret this. Today, due to illness, I am unable to attend Alan’s memorial service, however you are in my thoughts and prayers. Please accept my deepest sympathies.

My Dear Jane: I was so sad to hear of Lanny's passing. Jim Clark called to give me the news and it brought a rush of wonderful memories of the times we had together (at the fraternity house, the apartment on Penn Ave., the scuba diving trip to Fla.,etc.) And I will never forget how thoughtful you and Lanny were in 1969, when he invited me to Columbus, OH for a visit to mark my return from Vietnam. Lanny threw a party that seemed to last all weekend. Good times, all. Please know that you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. He will be missed.

My name is John Kelly and I am associated with a group of lay ministers called Presbyterian Outreach to Patients (POP) who visit patients in the Texas Medical Center in Houston. Over the last few months, I had the privilege of visiting with Alan at M.D. Anderson. Because we are both from Pennsylvania, we had much in common and had fun sharing PA stories (even though I'm from eastern PA and went to the dreaded Penn State). I learned more about elevators in my visits with Alan than I ever could have learned from a book. I always enjoyed talking with Alan and I will miss his sense of humor, his kindness and his dignity.
