Andrew James Obituary

Dr. Andrew Benjamin James, aged 88, passed on Sunday, January 28, 2024, at his home.
Dr. James's life was a symphony of devotion to public service, an unwavering commitment to his cherished family, an abundance of friendships nurtured over the years and most importantly, his faith and active membership in Westbury United Methodist Church.
Dr. James, had the honor to serve as the first Fair Housing Administrator for the City of Houston. Dr. James also served as the Assistant Director of the Administrative Support Division of the Department of Health and Human Services for the City of Houston.
Dr. James served as an Assistant Professor of Health Care Administration and Undergraduate Program Coordinator at Texas Southern University, followed by Interim Chair, Department of Health Sciences and Assistant Professor Health Administration Graduate and Undergraduate Programs, Texas Southern University College of Pharmacy and Health Services.
He was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Houston (TX) Alumni Chapter.
Dr. James leaves behind a devoted and loving wife of forty-two years, Charlene Hunter James, and a loving legacy in the form of his daughters: Dr. Andrea Jean James Andrews (Leonard Andrews), Sharlotte Lynn James Parker, April James Jones, and Dr. Charlene Mary James Piper (Ronnie Piper); as well as his sons: Andrew Benjamin James, Jr. (Maricel James), Jonathan Kyle James (Kiedra James), Dr. Ellsworth James (Stephanie) and Robert James. He is lovingly cherished by his brothers: Robert M. James of Chicago, IL and Thomas G. James (Barbara) of Dayton, Ohio. His life was further enriched by grandchildren and great-grandchildren, each a testament to his enduring love and care. Fondly remembered by his numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins as "Uncle Ben" or "Ben", Dr. James was a source of inspiration and wisdom for generations. His In-laws enjoyed his presence and inspiration to younger members of the family.
An evening visitation will be held on Monday, February 5th, 5 - 8 p.m. at Mabrie Memorial Mortuary.
The life of Dr. Andrew Benjamin James will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 6th, 11:00 a.m. at Westbury United Methodist Church, 5200 Willowbend Blvd., 77096. Visitation: 10 - 10:45 a.m.
Interment will take place at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery.

While I never had the pleasure of knowing Dr. James, I know how very deeply he was loved by his wife, Charlene Hunter James, someone I have known for a very long time. My heart goes out to her and Dr. James' entire family.

I'm so sorry to hear about Andy's death. We go back a long way - to our days at SPH. But he lived such a good life (and a long one!) and made so many contributions to the health of Houston that your memories of him will be a consolation.
