Dr. Hicks has been my son's pediatrician since 1996. We are so sorry he has passed away and send our sympathies to his family. I did not know that he was a Christian, yet he always acted in a quiet, dignified manner, and was always interested in my son's grades and activities. As a single parent, I always appreciated Dr. Hicks' understanding of the costs of medical care, and his willingness to treat both mother and child (and sometimes grandma, too) when we went to see him. He always recognized that cross-eyed look of the overworked tired mom, trying to make ends meet.

February 29, 2008

Dr. Nancy,
Dr. Ben was not just a gifted physician, but a kind and honorable man who lived his life just as he carried himself, quietly and with great dignity. We pray for all he left behind. May God bless you during this difficult time.

My heart aches as I read about the passing of Dr. Hicks. Both of my children were patients, and we all loved him. He was a caring, patient man. We are deeply saddened and sorry for your loss. We were referred to Dr. Hicks when we moved to Houston. When we moved to Humble, we continued to drive to Katy to see him because we loved him like no other doctor.

I want to thank everyone for their expression of love and gratitude toward my husband, Benfard E. Hicks, MD. Although we may never have met some of you, it made us very happy to know that he impacted your lives as he impacted ours. We will miss him, but we are very grateful that he was a positive influence for so many families. Nancy, Kelly, and Ben Hicks, Jr.

To: Those who loved and knew Dr. Benfard E. Hicks

From: Aliah Kelly, patient of Dr. Hicks

As you journey through these rough times please know that I can only empathize with what you may be going through. As a former patient of Dr. Hicks, being that he diagnosed me with asthma, I offer my heartfelt condolence and prayers to all that knew and loved him. Looking back on the past 5 years I am able to comfortably say, as I am sure many others can- that if it were not for Dr. Hicks I would not be as healthy as I am today. Dr. Hicks diagnosed me with asthma at a young age and provided me treatment that has given me a better teenage quality of life. Just as Dr. Hicks helped me in my time of need I feel that as his family you are more than deserving of a thank you that I never told him, so as you move along though your lives, remembering his; please also remember that there are people out there that care-
Me being one and my prayers are with you

Sincerely,

Aliah Kelly

I am deeply saddened to hear of Dr. Hicks passing. He was such a wonderful and caring pediatrician. He cared for all three of my children from 2001 when we moved to Katy until July of 2007 when we were transferred to another state. We missed him when we had to move and now find ourselves missing him even more. We miss his wonderful sense of humor and his joyful, light hearted laugh. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family. With deepest Sympathies, The Pool Family

Dr. Hicks was pediatrician to both our sons for the past ten years
from our arrival in Katy and throughout our sons illnesses.
He was there for us every time we called on him and he loved us and made us feel special, as we believe he did all his patients. At 16 and 20 our sons still preferred to see him over a family practitioner.

Dr. Hicks was living a life that revealed Christ. He showed kindness, patience, gentleness, humility, love and gratitude in all things.

We will miss him immensely but we have hope for the future to be together as Jesus promises..."Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am." John 14:1-3

We keep his family, staff and patients in our prayers for peace and comfort.

Dr. Hicks was my favorite doctor and friend. I will miss him. Ben

I, like most here have stated, was shocked to receive the letter about Dr Hicks passing. First, I'd like to say how proud I was to know that Kelsey Seybold took the right steps in reaching all of us that were indeed touched by such a warm, caring, dedicated and all around 'good-guy'....this of course being Dr Hicks.
Second, he's been my sons dr for quite sometime now. Brandon is 15 and the last time we saw him, he asked him about being a doctor, what schools, advice, anything that he could think of and Dr Hicks, who was of course booked all day took the time to answer Everything Brandon had asked and then some, that was just Dr Hicks, above and beyond, no questions left, always there, encouraging always having faith and giving hope and smiles freely. He was a Blessing to know, thank you for sharing your precious love with all of us, his extended family. May GOD Bless you and yours....

I just found out today that Dr. Hicks passed away, as I write these words I am crying with such sadness after reading all the wonderful expressions of love and gratitud so many parents like me felt towards Dr. Hicks. In this world concerned with material gain more than with human emotions Dr. Hicks was the exception, he was such a gentle, sweet man. I drove a long distance everytime I had to take my children to see him, I could have found another doctor nearby, but no one compared to him. My heart goes out to his family during this difficult time. We were all blessed to know such a great human being and doctor.

I was so shocked when I heard the news about Dr.Hicks. It's going to be very hard for me to choose another doctor for my children. My youngest just had her 15-18 month check up in January. He was the best pedi doctor and I will miss him. God Bless his family....

I just read the Kelsey-Seybold letter and am in shock that Dr. Hicks passed away. He was the only doctor my 8-year-old daughter has ever been treated by. Dr. Hicks was such a wonderful pediatrician for my kids. We've gotten to know him over the last 6 years, and with 4 kids, he really got to know us as well! My heart aches for his wife and especially his kids - I hope you will continue your pursuits because your dad was so proud of you and excited for you! I hope we are able to find another doctor who is even half as good as Dr. Hicks. He was always caring, never rushed, always thorough, never jumping to conclusions, conservative, yet proactive. We'll see you in Heaven!

I just received the letter from Kelsey-Seybold regarding the passing of Dr. Hicks and can honestly say I am devastated. We are moving back to Katy next month after a year away and was so looking forward to having him as my son's pediatrician again. My son has a rare genetic syndrome which includes a failing immune system and Dr. Hicks took care of him for years - with much love and grace. He saved my son's life more than once. He was a wonderful physician and a kind, generous person and will be greatly missed. My prayers are with his family.

Dr. Nancy and Family,
As I read all the messages, they reflect my heart as well. When Dr. Ben and you left Beaumont we were at a loss for the special care you gave our family. Going to Drs. Ben and Nancy was a safe and loving place to be for both parent and child. You helped us with the care of our three boys, Perry, Brian and Kevin. They are adults and doing fine and we thank both of you for your tender and excellent medical care. We were blessed to have you for our pediatricians. May God give you peace, comfort, and precious memories. We are praying for you and extend our sympathies. Remember you are loved and made a tremendous impact on not only our lives, but all those you have cared for.
May God bless you.

My deepest prayers go out to the family and staff of Dr. Hicks. He became my daughter’s doctor when she was just two days old. For over the past 5 years he has been a blessing to my family. Being a new mother, I often had many question, he and his staff was just a phone call away. He knew Taylor’s history without reading through her file. Whenever my daughter would visit the clinic; she would run and give him a hug. You could see in her eyes the love she had for Dr. Hicks. I want to thank Kelsey Seybold for sending out the letter informing us of his passing. I explained to Taylor on last night that God really wanted Dr. Hicks to come home. I told her to pray for Dr. Hicks’ safe arrival in heaven and for his family. As she began to pray what seemed like a normal prayer she ended the prayer with asking God to send Dr. Hicks back. I explained to her that he was happy at home with God. We truly love Dr. Hicks and will cherish his memory forever. Reginald, Tonya and Taylor Holte

We will miss Dr. Hicks so much, he was such a kind and gentle person and an excellent pediatrician. He had a very soft-spoken voice and such a wonderful way with children. We told our son that Dr. Hicks went to Heaven, and he was so sad that Dr. H went away but said that he is an angel now. Our deepest condolences to the Hicks family.

I was saddened when I read the letter from Kelsey Seybold regarding Dr. Hicks sudden passing. I'm an RN and Dr. Hicks was our pediatrician for several years. Dr. Hicks wasn't just any pediatrician. He had a true passion for his life and his work that one rarely sees. He had an exceptional gift for caring for children and their families. As a pediatrician, he had a way about him, with his experience and strong gentle nature, as he cared for sick children and their families. Parents left his office feeling encouraged and confident.
When my kids talked to him he would sometimes have this knowing, smile in his eyes when he looked at me that I will miss. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to his wife and his family. He will be missed.

We are so saddened to hear about Dr. Hicks. What are we going to do without him? There will never be another pediatrician like him! He was truly one of a kind. He took care of both of our sons since they came home from the hospital. We loved his kind and gentle spirit. He always took the time to listen and was always concerned and would personally call with lab results. We will truly miss him and certainly never forget him. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dr. Hicks was my three babies' doctor. He took care of all of them from the time they were born. He was such a blessing to them and they loved seeing him. Whenever my little girl had any little minor injury she would tell me to take her to "Dr. Hicks." We will truly miss his sweet, gentle spirit and kind manner. My best friend also took her children to Dr. Hicks. She called today when she got the letter from Kelsey and we both cried. We know we will never find another Dr. Hicks. It will be very hard to explain to my youngest two, but I told my oldest son that Dr. Hicks went to live with Jesus and he said, "So we will see him again?" And I said, "Yes, we will see him in heaven." To his family, we are very sorry for your loss and we thank you for sharing him with us. He was truly a special person and such a blessing to so many.

How shocked and saddened I am to learn of Dr. Hicks' passing. I loved his gentle manner and voice so quiet you really had to listen to catch what he said. When my oldest son was playing high school sports, I brought him to Dr. Hicks with a broken thumb. A few months later we thought he'd broken a bone in his foot. While leaning over examining the foot, Dr. Hicks quietly asked if my son would consider taking up violin. I chuckle every time I think of that. What a blessing this man was. He will be sorely missed.

We are very saddened to hear the news of Dr. Hicks passing. Our deepest condoloscences are with his family and his extended family of patients. We searched high and low for our child's pediatrician. When we found Dr. Hicks our prayers had been answered. His level of service was far above any professional I've encountered. He often went out of the way to make referrals to specialists near our home so we didn't have so far to travel. He and his staff always found a way to work us in when our daughter was sick. While we know he had many other patients it always seemed as though he was our daughters personal pediatrician. Whether it was removing a pebble from her nose or listening to her heart he always went above and beyond. We will miss Dr. Hicks. He served as a true model for all who interacted with him.

To the family of Dr. Hicks:

Our family just moved to Texas in July. I was so worried about finding a good Dr.for our kids. Boy, did the Lord bless us there. We've all had such a difficult time adjusting down here. Just the other day, I was counting my blessings and Dr. Hicks was high on my list. His compassion was outstanding. My children were so sad today when I read them the letter. Our family will really miss him. I feel really blessed that we had the opportunity to meet him. As my 11 year old daughter said today, we will meet again in heaven.

Dr. Hicks had cared for all my children, at one time I had 6 under the age of ten, you have also cared for my own grandson, now two. You will be greatly missed by us all. You never took any shortcuts with our children, always took the time to listen, to hear and to understand. One of my sons has autism, you helped me through his diagnosis and treatment plan. I will never forget the many times you called me from home in the middle of the night just to check on one of them. Dr. Hicks will be missed. He was a good doctor and an even better man. My sister Allison and I had him as our doctor for many years growing up. I remember going to him for the last time a few years ago. I had been trying to keep him as my doctor eventhough by that time I was 19 years old and he was a pediatrician. I remember he said to me with a smile "now Melissa, don't you think it is about time you found a different doctor". I remember swallowing before replying back "I suppose so". He had been my doctor for about 8 years. His soft spoken manor will never be forgotten in our family. I remember sometimes, he would speak so softly that my mom and I would ask eachother "what did he say?" as soon as he walked out of the door! My thoughts and prayers our with his family.

In this age of "doc in a box" and doctors rushing from patient to patient with hardly any time to discuss diagnoses, Dr. Hicks was a breath of fresh air. He spent extra time with his patients and their parents to make sure everyone understood what was going on. He was a caring man. My family's condolescenses go out the family and all of his friends. 22 years ago today (Jan. 29th) I became a first time mother. I will never forget the kind gentle words that Dr. Ben always had for Caleb and me. What would we have done without his words of encouragement? Then, 7 years later Dr. Ben was there the moment little Jerrod made his appearance. I truly feel that Drs. Ben and Nancy Hicks are the best doctors any mom or child could wish for. Thank you, Dr. Ben, for always being there for my children and me.
May you, now, rest in peace.
Love always,

The news of Dr Hicks' passing first reached our family via the children's networks at school. So many of our Katy children have been cared for by Dr Hicks for such a long time. They relayed that all their friends were equally saddened by this news.

I first heard of Dr. Hicks from a friend who took her children to him in the Beaumont area. She said that he moved to the Houston area for the schools for his own children. I thought, "that is the doctor for us, he puts his own children first, as it should be." He is a kind listener and a wonderful person. I loved the way he spoke with pride of his own children. Thank you to the Hicks family for sharing him with us in Katy. He will be missed.

To the Hicks Family:
We were deeply saddened to hear about Dr. Hicks. He had been our daughter's pedetrician from the day she was born in March of 2003. He made our visits more bearable for us because our daughter Hailey would always worry she was going to get a shot everytime she came to the office, and Dr. Hicks would console her and say, no shots today! Which made her feel much better. He will be greatly missed by our family and we are better people for knowing this wonderful man!! Our hearts go out to you at this time and in the days ahead.

Dr. Hicks has been a part of our family for over 19 years. Dr. Nancy and Dr. Ben cared for our oldest daughter Ashli when we lived in Beaumont. Imagine being newly married with a newborn with multiple handicaps and only given one year to live. Dr. Ben and Dr. Nancy were our calm in a storm. After several years we moved back home to the Katy area worried we would never find a Pediatrician as terrific as Dr. Ben. After a couple of years we were delighted to learn that Dr. Hicks had relocated to the Kelsey Seybold Clinic in Katy. I know God sent Dr. Ben to us to continue to care for Ashli, and now our two young daughters. I truly believe Dr. Hicks and the team of specialists he found for us in Houston, kept Ashli alive for 12 years. Ashli passed away in 2001, and Dr. Ben was very much a part of our family's healing.

Like everyone else, we always enjoyed hearing stories about his family. He was so proud of all of you. Sometimes I felt guilty about the time he was taking with us to share stories about what was happening with you. He was so special to us, and there will never be another Dr. Ben.

May God provide you comfort in this difficult time.

He was always very caring and compassionate towards my children. It's always the good that die young. Don't ever take advantage of anything...you never know what may happen next...God bless everyone. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Dr. Hick with Mary at 1 month old

I have only known Dr. Hicks for such a short time since my daughter is only 5 months old. But I was greatly saddened by the news because I could tell from the first time that I met Dr. Hicks that he was a man with a beautiful soul. I know he will surely be missed by many. He was always very comforting when I was worried about my daughter, being a first-time mom. He answered all of my questions patiently and was so gentle and caring with my baby Mary. It felt like I was taking her to a friend whenever I would bring her to him. I will never forget the last time I saw him. He was talking about his wife and kids. He was very proud of them and I will keep them in my prayers. I know the good Lord will welcome him into His heavenly home.

Although our young son was a fairly new patient to Dr. Hicks, we were all very fond of him. We knew from the first visit that he was the right pediatrician for our family. Not only was Dr. Hicks extremely intelligent, he was always friendly, attentive, engaging, and well studied and knowledgeable in his field. Our daughter enjoyed going to see Dr. Hicks, and he would always be sure to have her pick out stickers even if she wasn't the patient that day. Dr. Hicks was very fond of his family and spoke well of them; with a smile. As recently as last week we were singing his praises and giving recommendations for him. Our prayers and deepest sympathy are with his family and colleagues. Dr. Hicks will be sorely missed.

Dr. Hicks has cared for our children since we brought our
24-week, 1-lb, 14-oz. preemie home from the hospital. Over the years his support, encouragement, and care have been invaluable to our family as we faced many challenges and surgeries. Today our son is a healthy 9-year old. Dr. Hicks has been a caring friend and a member of our family. Dr. Hicks is the kind of doctor that you rarely find: caring, gentle, and kind, willing to go the extra mile and always patient. It is hard to imagine life without him. It is hard to imagine our children growing up without him in their lives. He is truly irreplaceable.

To his family: We are praying that the Lord will wrap you in His comforting arms as you walk through this valley. We patients and parents think our loss is so great, but yours is so much greater. Our prayer for you is in Jesus' Words found in Matthew 5:4 "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted." May Jesus comfort and sustain you as only He can. Our thoughts, hearts, and prayers are with you.

Dear Hicks family:

I was so surprised to hear of Dr. Hicks passing -- he cared for my son for the past 10 years or so at Kelsey. He will be missed by our family. He always had a kind word and a gentle manner.

I know in my heart he is in a better place with those that have gone before him.

Words cannot express how saddend we were to find out about Dr. Hicks passing. He has been my son's peditrician for several years now. He was referred to me by my peditrician in Beaumont, Dr. Derrick. I was so happy to find him. I had just moved back to the area and was really sad to leave a wonderful peditrician behind in Bmt. I was so lucky Dr. Derrick knew Dr. Hicks and told me about him. I thought many times of calling him to thank him for the recommendation. Dr. Hicks was such a kind and gentle soul. My children adored him. My three year old plays doctor at home and calls himself Dr. Hicks. I know this will continue to bring warmth to my heart. Dr. Hicks helped us get through some scary tests with my three year old. He handle us and the situation so gently. He even called me on a Sunday evening to give me the results of those tests so I would not have wait until Monday. He knew that I was very nervous. I am sure he gave all his patience the same level of care and concern. He will be missed.

Thank you for sharing your son, husband, and father.

I loved Dr.Hicks very much.It is hard for my family and I to even imagine knowing that he is gone. I said this to my mom about a 17 year old that died on the corner close to us. he is probably happier in heaven . I have NO doubt that he did go to heaven. He was very nice to me and I'm sure he was as nice as he was to me to everybody he worked with and everyone he saw poor or rich. I'm sure GOD is happy to have Dr.Hicks in heaven. I know I would! from: Katy Age:9

I am sitting here stunned and shaking because just a short time ago, I called the office to make an appointment for my daughter and was given the news by one of the nurses.

My children simply adored Dr. Hicks; he has been their pediatrician since they were born and they are now 7 and 5. As their Mom, I was completely comfortable and 100% confident in the decisions made by Dr. Hicks and was impressed by his kind and gentle ways from the very first time he touched them as a newborn. His voice was soothing, his hands gentle, and he never made me feel like I was asking too many questions.

To his entire family -- I am so very sorry for your loss and my children and I will keep you all in our prayers during this difficult time. He spoke about you with love and admiration. May God comfort you and hold you close to His heart, now and always.

We will never forget our Dr. Hicks.

To the Hicks Family,

We are just so deeply saddened to hear about Dr. Hicks. He was an incredible doctor, and he worked so hard to make sure that the children in his care were given the best care. He has been taking care of my girls since they were born (98 and 00), and was so patient and loving with them. He will be greatly missed, and our prayers are with your family. May God's blessings shine on all of you, and give you peace in knowing that he is smiling on all of us from Heaven.

Dr. Nancy and family,
I am very saddened to hear the news of Dr. Ben. You both took care of my children while you were in Beaumont. You both gave the best care. Dr. Ben was very kind, gentle, and compassionate. He always had a gentle soul when dealing with the children. As a doctor he was a tremendous blessing. You could just tell how much he loved his family. May God comfort you and your family at this time.

Our world has lost an incredible man and we are deeply saddened by the loss of Benfard Hicks, M.D. He was like a family member to us caring for our children as well as his own. He loved his own children dearly and spoke so proudly of both his daughter's accomplishments as a resident and his son who recently moved away to attend college. I hope you and your family will be comforted knowing your dad gave so much to us all the while remembering you and speaking so freely about how proud he was of you! Thank you for sharing him with us and may God grant you peace in this difficult time.

Dr. Nancy, Kelly, Ben Jr.
We valued your father and husband as a Dr. who was devoted and dedicated. We all talked about him Jan. 10 when Laura's daughter was born. She wanted so much to use the two of you for Pediatricians. You are in our hearts and prayers. It is a great loss. We love you!
