Calvin Cline Obituary

CALVIN RALPH CLINE, JR. has gone to meet his Lord and join his beloved mother Willie Albertha Henry Cline, father Calvin Ralph Cline Sr., and son Rev. Calvin Ralph Cline, III, and siblings Birdie Crouch and Robert Thomas. He leaves to mourn his passing, daughters, Kathlean Diane Cline, Patricia Cline Malveaux-Keeling and Cara Cline Hoskins (Victor), grandchildren Joseph A. Malveaux, III, Chemberli Cline, Cecily Cline-Walton, (Johnathan), Yaasmeen Cline-Heard, Gyasi Cline Heard and Dylan Marie Hoskins, great-grandchildren, Jacobi Cline, Elijah Walton and Zora Walton, brother Hudson Scott and many other relatives and friends. A native Houstonian, Calvin was born August 13, 1928. He graduated from Phyllis Wheatley High School and received his BS from Tuskegee Institute and a MS from Texas Southern University before pursuing further studies at University of Houston. Calvin began his teaching career in Wadley, Georgia, Houston-Tillotsen College in Austin and shortly thereafter returned to Houston to begin a long tenure of service with HISD. Most of his career was spent as Chairman of the Physical Education Dept. and head football coach at Miller Jr. High School. He inspired many young people who knew him as teacher, mentor and "Coach Cline" at Miller and later at Key Middle School before retiring in 1989. Calvin was a devoted member of St. Mary Purification Catholic Church. At the request there were no services held for his homegoing. In lieu of any other memorials, the family request donations be made to St. Mary's in his name.

"Coach" Cline, was "the coach" at Miller Jr. High. Doesn't matter the sport, he was the man. Got the paddle ONCE.

I'm glad I had the good pleasure to know Mr. Cline. I can still remember him standing in the hall way by the gym, at W.E.Miller, in his white uniform and wearing a pair of white Chuck Taylors on his feet. He was easy to talk to. I still miss him today. My condolences go out to his family.

Mr. Cline,
It’s been a long time since I last saw you, about 1986 or so, when Cara and I were not even teenagers. I want to thank you for your kind and stern leadership. You are in a much better place and I know I will see you again.

Uncle Calvin, I will truly miss you. You were my favorite uncle. I hate the time that we spent apart, but I was glad that I was able introduce you to my family and we picked up where we left off. I will always remember the summers that I spent with you swimming, playing and you yelling at us kids to be quiet and stop fighting! :) I will remember you cooking us breakfast every morning and being such a wonderful uncle. Thanks for the memories and I will always keep you in my heart. Take care of Mur and your other family and look out for the rest of us down here. We will miss you!!! Love ya!

To Cara and The Cline Family:
It was with great sadness Ryan told me of your father's dead. Even though I never met your dad, from meeting you when you
were a student at Bellaire H.S., Mr. Cline had to be a great man. I strongly believe the old adage,"the fruit doesn't fall far from the tree."
I know that you will miss your dad forever and always; but I offer you these words of encouragement:

Hope is the sun that rises with every new day,the assurance that as life goes on, time restores the spirit.
I will keep you and your family in my prayers.
Peace of God be with you.

What Coach Cline instilled in me is that there is something called "integrity," which no one can ever take away -- and you never have to compromise.
