My first wife, Judy King, was the first secretary of the Habitat for Humanity board. She worked with Mr. Umland and really thought highly of him. He was a man of vision and faith. Thousands of people in Houston have benefited directly from his effort.

I had the pleasure of working with Carl on an enhanced oil recovery project in Illinois. That was in the 1980-1984 time frame, and I was working for Exxon Production Research Co. I was also very impressed with his work with the Habitat for Humanity project.
