Charles Fougerousse

Dr. Charles Fougerousse Galveston Charles "Charlie" Fougerousse died suddenly Tuesday, January 15, 2008 at his residence. Charles was born July 16, 1929 to Frank and Mary Fougerousse in Morrilton, Arkansas. He had two sisters, Pat and Dorothy and three brothers, Frank, George and Norbert. He graduated from high school at Sacred Heart High School in 1946 in Morrilton, Arkansas. He served his country in the U.S. Navy while stationed in San Diego, California. He then moved to San Marcos, Texas and completed his college degree from Southwest Texas Teacher's college at night while working in the life insurance industry to support his family. After deciding to pursue a degree in medicine, he moved his family to Galveston in 1958 and completed medical school at the University of Texas Medical Branch. He completed his residency in Little Rock, Arkansas and returned to Galveston in 1966 to go into practice in Obstetrics and Gynocology. He retired from practice this past June after forty-one years as a physician. He was a long-standing member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was a strong part of both the local medical and Galveston community throughout his life. Charles long tenure in the medical community included his participation in a number of organizations including the Galveston County Medical Society, Texas Medical Association, American Medical Association, Texas Flying Physicians, American College of OB/GYN and Texas Association of OB/GYN. He was also bestowed numerous honors including MU DELTA Honorary Society, American College of OB/GYN, Diplomat-American Board of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Executive Board-Galveston County Medical Society, Vice-President-Texas Association of OB/GYN, Chairman-Dept. of OB/GYN-St. Mary's Hospital, Chairman-Physicians Trust Fund and Chairman-Dept. of Operating Theatre-St. Mary's Hospital. He has been on a number of boards throughout the years including past president of the Galveston Country Club, Texas First Bank board member, past Mardi Gras King of Krewe of Momus and numerous other committees and organizations benefitting the Galveston Community. Charles leaves behind many wonderful memories for his patients, friends and family. He was a very benevolent man and physician, through the years taking care of many patients, who had little or no means to pay, free of charge. His passion was his dedication to his patients as a physician and thanked God for giving him the talent to be able to help others. He had many hobbies including flying, hunting, fishing and golf.he was an avid outdoorsman. He loved his family very much and cherished the time he spent as a husband to his lovely wife, a parent to his grateful children and as "Papa" to his adoring grandchildren. His wonderful smile and warm laugh will be greatly missed by everyone. Left to cherish his precious memory is his wife of fifty-six years, Vivian Fougerousse of Galveston, his children Carol Fondren and husband Robert of Houston, Charles Fougerousse and wife Patti of Lufkin and Steve Fougerousse and wife Jennifer of League City; grandchildren Ashley Fondren, Robert Fondren, Mary Catherine Fondren and Berkely Fondren of Houston, Jennifer Fougerousse and Christopher Fougerousse of Lufkin and Madeleine Fougerousse and Anne Marie Fougerousse of League City. He has many other relatives throughout the country who will miss him dearly. A Funeral Mass will be held Friday, January 18, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with Father Niall Nolan officiating. Honorary pallbearers are Christopher Fougerousse, Robert Fondren, Berkely Fondren, R.A. Apffel, Ralph Smith and Dr. Charles Litton.
