Charles Stubblefield Obituary

CHARLES ALEXANDER STUBBLEFIELD, Our Beloved Husband, Father and Grandfather was called home on August 3, 2008 after a long struggle with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. A man of strong unwavering moral Christian values, Charles was a leader in his church, family and community. He served as Deacon, Chairman of the Board and Elder Emeritus at Bellaire Christian Church. His love for his family and for Christ was evident in his every action and deed. Charles was born in Fairhope, Alabama to Richard and Eva Stubblefield on June 21, 1923. His enjoyment for the outdoors came from a childhood spent fishing, swimming and exploring the gulleys and bays around Fairhope. At the age of 18 his explorations took him to worlds beyond Fairhope when he served six years in the Navy during World War II venturing to places such as the Philippines, Greece, Italy, Shanghi and the Panama Canal. Further exploration after the Navy brought him to Houston where he was employed by McDermott Engineering for over 30 years. Charles is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Joan Williams Stubblefield, daughter Alice Stubblefield, son and daughter in law, Don and Cheryl Stubblefield, grandsons, Kevin, Blake, Taylor and William; various nieces and nephews including Marilyn, Shannon, Heather, Melba and Eve. He is preceded in death by brothers, Richard, Lawrence and Don and by sisters, Mary and Margaret. Visitation will be held Thursday from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Forest Park Westheimer Funeral Home. Graveside Services will be held at 3:00 pm on Friday, August 8, 2008 at Austin Memorial Park, Austin, TX. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to Park Manor Cy Fair for their loving care and concern for both Charles and his family. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to The Alzheimer's Association or to The Parkinson's Disease Foundation.

We were sad for your family, but happy for Mr. Stubblefield--a great man who lived a great life full of love, adventure, and I'm sure, plenty of challenges. But you would never have known it from his easy, kind manner. I enjoyed my every encounter with him--and with his family. They were thinking of men like him when they started talking about "The Greatest Generation." It was a pleasure knowing him.

My family will be praying for yours during these tough times. Hats off for another brave war hero. He will be missed.

Joan and Family,
Know that Frances and I wrap you in our prayers at this time. I recall, as former minister at Bellaire Christian, when Charles became the chairman of the elders. At first he humbly thought he could not possibly do a good job, but then he proved his worth and leadership which brought him into the chairmanship of the board. I was so proud of him, and I still am. I watched him grow into the responsibility.

Joan & Family,

Tommy & I are blessed to have spent time at Bellaire Christian Church with you. You and Charlie were the example of a loving Christian marriage to us and how you always served our Lord. We are so sorry for your loss, Joan, but weThank God for Jesus knowing that we will all meet again.

Always in our Hearts,
Ginger and Tommy Brown

As Board Chair at Bellaire Christian Church in 1995, Charlie was willing to support my plan to host a luncheon for gang members in our Fellowship Hall so that a community leader could calm tensions that had already resulted in several shootings. We will never know what lives may have been saved as a result of that meeting, but we do know that, as a result of that meeting, SER-Ninos Charter School was started in our church and is still one of the highest-ranked charter schools in Houston

Dear Joan, Alice, and Don,
Charlie was a GOOD friend for more than thirty years. The profound encouragement that he provided to me as I embarked on my own naval career has always been deeply appreciated and will never be forgotten. May God bless you and all your family as you endure this troubling time. "To live on in the hearts of those left behind is not to die."
