Damian Ccvi Obituary

Sister Damian Murphy, CCVI
02/12/1930 - 01/12/2023
Sister Damian Murphy, CCVI, a Sister of Charity of the Incarnate Word, has been called from this life on earth at St. Placidus Convent on January 12, 2023. May she now enjoy the fullness of eternal life with God forever.
Sister Damian was born in 1930 to Cornelius and Kate (O'Mahony) Murphy in Newcestown, Bandon, Co. Cork, Ireland. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, Houston, TX on March 6, 1950 at St. Michael Convent, Co. Clare, Ireland. Sister consecrated her life to God through Profession of Perpetual Vows on December 8, 1957 at Villa de Matel, Houston.
Sister Damian began her formal education at Sacred Heart Dominican College in Houston, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. After completing her studies, she gave excellent patient care in her role as a nursing supervisor at some of the Congregation's sponsored healthcare facilities including: St. Mary's Hospital, Galveston, TX and St. Bernardine Hospital, San Bernardino, CA. Additionally, she served at St. Francis Hospital, Tulsa, OK. Sister also served as director of critical care at St. Joseph, Houston, TX. She later continued with graduate studies and earned a Master of Science degree in health care administration from the University of Houston, Clear Lake, TX. With these qualifications, she began an internship in administration at St. John Hospital, Santa Monica, CA. Upon completion of her internship, she joyfully served as the administrator for St. Elizabeth Hospital, Houston, TX. In later years, Sister ministered as director of mission effectiveness for 19 years at CHRISTUS St. Michael Hospital, Texarkana, TX. While at St. Michael, May 27, 2010 was proclaimed as Sr. Mary Damian Murphy Day. Also, while at St. Michael, a trail in Texarkana was named in her honor: The Sister Damian Murphy Trail. After her service at St. Michael, Sister dedicated her time to prayer at the Villa de Matel. Sister was grateful to God for calling her to religious life. She was also grateful to family and friends and the CCVI Congregation for their love and support throughout the years.
Sr. Damian is survived by her brother, Cornelius Murphy of Co. Cork, Ireland and many nieces and nephews.
A special thank you is extended to all who cared for Sister during her last days.
Sister Damian's body will be received at the Immaculate Conception Chapel, Villa de Matel, 6510 Lawndale St., Houston, TX at 5:00 PM on Friday, January 20, 2023, followed by Evening Praise and a celebration of her life. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in the Immaculate Conception Chapel at 10:30 AM on Saturday, January 21, 2023. A Rite of Committal will follow at Villa de Matel Cemetery.

I worked at CHRISTUS St. Michael while Sister Damien was there. I remember her morning prayers, her daily rounds, and most of all, her peaceful spirit. She truly made a mark on my life. I still talk about her after all these years. She is with God now- she worked her whole life to be with Him. My condolences to her family. Words can't express how I felt about Sister. She was my "angel" right here on earth. She counseled me when I sought direction, prayed with me when I lost my Mother, and was simply "His hands". She will be missed.

A dedicated sister, a devoted nurse, and a TIRELESS San Antonio Spurs fan, Sr Damian lived life passionately, or as passionate as a nun can be,lol. She was a mentor many, a warden to some, but could be your friend...if u agreed with her. Famous for her Christmas whisky cakes, enjoyed in moderation, her love for EVERYONE was evident. Friend of the nurse, principal to the surgeon, counselor to all...she will be missed greatly.
