Daniel Staub Obituary

Daniel Joseph "Rusty" Staub
1944-2018
Daniel Joseph "Rusty" Staub, also known as "Le Grande Orange", was called to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Thursday, March 28, 2018 at the age of 73. Rusty was born April 1, 1944 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He attended St Cecelia Grammar School and Jesuit High School in New Orleans. He broke into the majors at the age of 19 with the Houston Colt 45's and finished his career with the New York Mets in 1985 at the age of 41. Rusty became a huge hit with baseball fans in two countries during an All-Star career that spanned 23 Major League seasons from 1963-1985. Rusty devoted his retirement years doing charitable work. In 1985 he created the New York Police and Fire Widow's and Children's Benefit Fund, dedicated to supporting the families of New York City's first responders who have been killed in the line of duty, through lifelong financial assistance and a network of support. Also, the Rusty Staub Foundation has supported the Catholic Charities approach to address hunger in the New York City metropolitan area over the past 10 years. Rusty will be dearly missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Staub Sr., and his mother, Alma Morton Staub. He is survived by his brother Raymond "Chuck" Staub, Jr (Sandra), his sister Sally Johnston, and his sister Susan Tully (Jerry). Rusty is also survived by numerous nephews and nieces. Rusty's family and friends would like to invite you to attend his memorial service on Tuesday, April 17, 2018, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church on Buffalo Speedway at 10:00AM. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to New York Police and Fire Widow's and Children's Benefit Fund, the Rusty Staub Foundation, or any other charity of your choice.

In my opinion, one of the GREATEST BASEBALL PLAYERS OF ALL TIME! I was in a crowd once that he was in and people were going crazy trying to get close to him and shake his hand, me included! He was one of the stars of the Houston Astro's and was one of the main crowd raisers! RIP Mr. Staub! You were a fine man and an outstanding citizen. The world is a worse place without the likes of you in it!!

Rusty, it was a pleasure following you throughout your baseball career. You made everyone from Louisiana proud the way you carried yourself. New York City loves you just as much, not only for being a great Met and helping them win, but all the charitable endeavors you committed yourself to. Your restaurant 33rd & 3rd in Manhattan also was a beloved spot, enjoyable by all.

R.I.P.

I never actually met Rusty, but I did see him last summer at an autograph session. I finally got to tell him that he was the reason I became a Mets fan and a baseball fan. His red hair caught my eye when my dad was watching a Mets game. I asked who he was and then started asking questions about baseball. I was hooked! He was my first baseball 'crush' and will always have a special place in my heart. R.I.P Rusty you were a wonderful human being XOXO.

While i didn't know Mr. Staub I read last week that when he was traded to Montral he took French lessons so he could talk to and understand young fans of his. The very thought of sucu a gesture brings goose bumps to me especially considering the behacvoir of some of today's athletes. RIP.

Rusty was always a favorite, even when he was far away and we only had memories of the times we spent as kids together. RIP, Rusty.

Thoughts and prayers go to you that knew Rusty better than I. I was a fan that thought of Rusty as a very underrated baseball player that loved the game. After his baseball career he took it to the next level in his service to his fellow people that were downtrodden and made their lives better. RIP Rusty.
