I first met Darla on the Yanpet Project. Not only was Darla a joy to work with, she was the ultimate Professional. Richard, I can not imagine the grief that you are enduring, but if it is any comfort my prayers are with you. I know that Darla is watching us from above. It's been very hard for me to accept that Darla is no longer here with us. I was walking on to a plane when I received the news and was literally heartbroken. Darla meant so much to me personally and my career here at Fluor, that she will always have a cherished place in my heart. She was a great inspiration to me. It was an honor to have met and worked with Darla. She was a special person. I worked closely with her in many projects moves in my almost 10 years at Fluor. She made it so easy for everybody. I had the honor and pleasure to cross paths with Darla on a number of occasions. She was a super professional and an instant friend. She thrived at any level and made anybody comfortable. She exuded confidence and inspired confidence. I'm sad that I will not work with her again. She is missed.

There are no words that I can say that will make your sorrow go away or your broken hearts be mended.
Darla was an inspiration to all who knew her. Everyone was touched by her in some way and I truly believe she made the world a better place, whether at work or in her personal life.
I don’t believe there will be a day go by that I will not think of her dedication and support to myself and my PDDM team in the Fluor Calgary office.

I met Darla when she first became the GEL for PDDM, and I worked with her on the Practices and Guidelines that explain how to use PDDM with Projects OnLine. No matter how busy she was, Darla always took the time to patiently explain and demonstrate what I need to document. I knew I was dealing with an extremely smart, experienced, and committed professional...as well as a friendly and kind human being.
I never would have guessed you were dealing with cancer all this time, Darla. I'm sorry for what you went through, and sorry you have left us, but I know you have a high place in heaven. My deepest sympathy to your family, friends, and colleagues.

I had never known there were ladies like Darla in this world. Without Darla's help and Debra Schochler, I would not be here at Fluor today. Because she was on the other side of the world on a trip, when I needed her, she still took the time to help me. I know there are few and far ladies that have the positive outlook on life and problems that Darla had. I hope to get to know someone who could come close to the way Darla was with people, all people. I know Darla had enough strength for herself, her family, and all the people she helped. Darla worked with me on the Kizomba Project and she taught me the intricacies of document control and ProArc. She was a wonderful human being. Darla always had time to help others and the patience to explain. We kept in touch over the years. Darla was my friend as well as an influential contributor to Fluor's success. I met Darla about 10 years ago when I began my career at Fluor. On first impressions, she appeared to me as a strong, smart, dedicated, powerful, and caring woman. How right that impression was. After a few years of working for her on the Yanpet Project, my admiration of her became greater. No matter what the task or the difficulty of it, she would take it on without fear and conquer it. She was a huge inspiration to me and gave me the opportunity of a lifetime. I am grateful to have known her.

Me and perhaps the whole PDDM group in Manila office never knew the Darla was battling from cancer untill we heard this shocking news. It was a true blessing to work for Darla as her Admin Asst while in her role as Manager of PDDM. Darla always had such a positive attitude about everything and always wore a smile on her face; even throughout her battle with cancer, that smile remained on her face. We all have a story about Darla at Fluor. She only met me once when she came to do POL training at a Fluor client site. She remembered my name when she saw my resume and even though the interviews did not go well because my knowledge was not exactly Document Control, I was hired contract. After only 4 months, she recommended that I become Fluor direct. After suffering through Enron and 2 layoffs after that, Fluor has been a blessing for 3 years and I owe it to Darla. She is in heaven without a doubt and with a rich reward.

I will miss Darla's humor, we worked together on the Yanpet, Chad, and other projects beginning in 1995. I'll never forget her reaction to our birthday surprise. She loved Flamenco dancing but as would be expected everyone thought it was "Flamingo" dancing. So on her birthday we decorated her cube with a huge banner that read "It's Flamenco, Not Flamingo Dancing Stupid!" She was floored by the gesture and the over the top decorations and fuss. I do not even know how to express what Darla's friendship meant to me. In many ways we complimented each other - she calm and decisive, me explosive and decisive! Many times we would go head to head on a subject and yet 10 minutes later be laughing together about something or other. She profoundly changed the way we do business at Fluor and the changes she brought about touched every single department. She almost single-handedly brought Fluor into the 21st century and made us a world leader in the handling of electronic data. No one could equal Darla in personal style...only Darla could carry off the stand up collar and the bodacious jewlery. I loved her like a sister and will quite simply miss her forever. I will be always grateful that I had the opportunity to know her as a co-worker, mentor and most of all...Friend. My heart goes out to Richard, Ray & Nancy, Mrs. Berkey and all her knew and loved her.

In my mind’s eyes, I can see Darla’s smile. When Fluor project teams, or any of us for that matter, needed help, Darla would step up, solve the problem and smile. Darla had her way to make things better. I worked with Darla as part of the Project OnLine team at Fluor. I had the privilege with working directly with Darla Meriam for the past seven years as we implemented Fluor’s Projects OnLine system around the world. Darla’s people skills and problem solving skills were outstanding. When there was a problem to be solved, especially with our clients, be it in South Africa, Santiago, or Perth she was on the next plane to work through the issues, and when she returned to Houston the issues had always been solved.
Darla was Fluor’s expert on document management, and was recognized by all to be the best. She will be greatly missed by the entire Fluor Organization, and by the many Fluor clients she served.
