David DeWitt Obituary

Dr. David P. DeWitt,
a retired U.S. Air Force colonel, died Dec. 10 in Midland, Texas, after a short illness. He was 54. A man of strong faith, David has now gone to be with his Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.
David was a loving husband to Laurie, his wife of 30 years, and the proud father of daughters Katie and Emily, both graduate students at the University of Texas Permian Basin. David loved to travel with his family and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He had a quiet strength and a giving heart.
David was born in New Orleans on May 1, 1958. After graduating from Sam Houston State University and the University ofTexas Dental Branch at Houston, David entered the Air Force in 1987 as a dentist. He earned his medical degree, as valedictorian of his class, from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, specializing in oral and maxilliofacial surgery.
In his 21-year military career, David served at bases in Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, Japan and Alaska. After retiring from the Air Force, he joined a medical practice in Midland in 2008. David volunteered with Smiles on Wheels in West Texas and traveled to the Arctic Circle on an Air Force humanitarian mission. His life of service and concern for others was a life well-lived.
Other survivors include his parents, Howard and Carolyn Hunter; his siblings and their spouses, Gene and Leigh De-Witt, Jerry and Mary Jo Ebersole, Ronnie and Anne Grohol-ski, John and Rhonda DeWitt; and many nieces and nephews.
Services with military honors will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Forest Park Funeral Home in The Woodlands.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, www.ocrf.org.

I learned a lot from Dave DeWitt as we journied through life together. Although I was his teacher for two years at Wilford Hall, I perceived him as a humble Man of God. He taught me much more than I ever taught him.

God bless his family and children.

The world lost a great and knowledgeable man. I had the pleasure of working with him while stationed at Elmendorf AFB, AK, and it was amazing what he taught me about oral surgery and caring for patients. He will be dearly missed, and my heart goes out to his wife and two daughters.

Dave and I worked together in Alaska. He took me on my 1st fishing trip on the Russian. I'll always remember him grilling up the fish at our clinic picnics. The world just seems less bright today. God bless you.

Dave you will truly be missed! You were such a great guy, a good dentist and wonderful husband and father. I know it wasn't a good thing with my office next to yours, because there were some conversations that came out of there that I will not repeat, but it was nice to know that I could turn to you for guidance if I needed to. Also thanks for turning me on to eating salmon calcus straight off the grill! Laurie thank you all for the good times we had on Thanksgiving Day and the good times we had spending time downtown. Your family will always be in my prayers, may God Bless you, Emily and Katie!

I was a year behind Dave in OMS training at Wilford Hall. Dave was so good at all he did that it put a lot more pressure on us "underlings" which made us better surgeons and more importantly, better people! I know his steady hand and guidance will be missed by many. God bless you Dave and your family. Give them the strength to go forward. They are in our prayers. You will be missed!

Rose Blankenship couldn't have said it better...I too worked with him during his residency at WHMC. He always had my utmost respect because he always looked out for his technicians. I have a lot of fond memories and have missed his quiet humor. We've all lost a great man! My condolences and thoughts are with his family.

David and I were high school band classmates in Houston. He earned the position of drum major and even at that young age showed the quiet leadership qualities he would carry forward in life. I've not know David for quite sometime, but was very sad to see of his passing. Our high school graduating class is less one of her leaders. He will be missed.

Dave was my Chief Resident at WHMC during my second year of OMFS training. He was a true inspiration...a man of intelligence, integrity, ethics and compassion. I have many fond memories of his mentoring and friendship throughout the 2 years I knew him.
I would like to offer condolences and prayers to his family and loved ones, and though your hearts are aching right now, I pray that God's peace will heal your pain. He will be missed by everyone who's lives he touched. God Bless!
