David Ness Obituary

Dr. David Eli Ness
11/09/1946 - 09/28/2023
David was curious and caring about everything. He was an avid reader, writer, musician, and practitioner of psychiatry. He was an equally sweet father and husband. David graduated from Columbia College, City University of New York, and Yale School of Medicine. He trained in psychiatry at NY Hospital, Westchester. For several years, he taught high school English before going to medical school. During and after training for psychiatry, he retained a lifelong interest in understanding the way language and stories frame thought. As a teacher, not only of hundreds of students and residents, but of all those around him, always ready with a book recommendation or an interesting analysis, David inspired us to consider the world from a more nuanced perspective.
David was predeceased by his parents Julius and Mildred Ness. He was a loving husband to Roberta Bergman Ness and father to his children Joel and Sara Bergman Ness, and to his brother Paul Ness, who survive him.

Im so sorry to hear of Dr. Ness' passing. This man saved my life, literally. He treated me with his tremendous medical expertise but also trained me to change my thought patterns based on the condition I had. Instead of exiting the world prematurely, he helped me achieve complete remission, where I have stayed for 20 years this year.

What a tremendously ethical, compassionate and gifted physician in the world of psychiatry, and just a great guy. He will be sorely missed.

Just reading the news about Dr. Ness passing. I'm so very sorry to learn of this. We have been missing him at the Bellaire pools since Covid. He recommended me for a job at Menninger Clinic. I'll always remember Dr. Ness for his calm and sense of purpose. G-d bless your family. I cherish all of you through him.
