Didier Piot Obituary

Didier F. Piot
09/02/1945 - 08/10/2023
Didier Piot, M.D. passed away on August 10, 2023 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
Born September 2, 1945 in St. Malo, France, he was clearly destined for a medical career for even as a young boy Didier always carried a first aid kit just in case family or friends needed help.
After completing his medical training in Ottawa, Canada, Didier moved to Houston to open a private practice. At that time an unknown epidemic, now known to be HIV/AIDS, began to decimate our community. Recognizing the clear need for medical expertise, he pioneered the private practice response to the epidemic.
Always the organizer, and with the help of Joseph C. Gathe Jr. M.D. and Edward Stool M.D., he opened and co-directed the Special Diseases Unit at Park Plaza Hospital in 1986. It was the largest dedicated HIV unit in a private setting in the country. Here those with HIV received state of the art care in a compassionate environment. Research generated from that unit was recognized worldwide.
Didier was preceded in death by his parents, Lucien Piot and Yvonne Leroux as well as his life partner, David Haber. He is survived by his sister Laurence Friedman and nephew Marc Friedman, as well as numerous friends and colleagues who will miss him greatly.
Didier and his life partner, David Haber, were very fond of the fine arts in Houston, especially Ballet. If desired, memorial donations may be made to the Mr. David Haber and Dr. Didier Piot Scholarship Fund at the Houston Ballet Academy, Houston Ballet, 601 Preston St., Houston, TX 77002. I worked for Dr Piot as a Registered Nurse from February 1988 until his first retirement in 1992, then returned when he came out of retirement to open the Plaza Clinical Treatment Center and remained with him there until he retired a second time in 1995. I was the Clinical Coordinator during the PCTC days. He demanded a great deal of those around him, but he also paid his office personnel exceedingly well. The welfare of his patients was always his first and greatest priority, and I believe he was unparalleled in the Houston medical community in that regard. And without his foresight, I would not have had the later incredible opportunities that I did. I will be forever grateful to him.

I will miss seeing Dr. Piot come through the doors at Dr. Gathe's office, to just say HI to us all and have a nice chat. I hope that Lauri, his close sister, is finding peace in knowing he has so many people who loved him.
