DONALD (DON) A. HORN July 14, 1920 - Sep. 11, 2007 Donald (Don) August Horn, of the greatest generation, died Tuesday September 11th after a prolonged battle with heart failure. A long time resident of Houston, Don and his family moved to the Heights in 1936 with his mother and father and two brothers and sister. At the outbreak of WWII joined the Army Air Corps and was a Flight Engineer/Gunner on B-24 Liberatorsm 466th Bomb Group, 786th B.S., Eighth Air Force, Attlebridge, England. I grew up in the politics of the 1960s in Houston and admired Don Horn as an articulate and common sense advocate for the working people of Houston and the U.S. I can only imagine the geat accomplishments that he has accomplished since I moved away from Houston. I still quote Don on his view regarding those who fear inflation more than the loss of jobs caused by high interest rates:
"I don't care if gravy costs a dollar a sop, as long as I have the dollar to pay for it." Thank God for true men like Don who care for their fellow man and act like it.

Dearest Ruth, I know how much you will miss Don. Many will miss a wonderful man and a good husband and father. He did so much for others.
I did not read about his passing until after the memorial service or I would have been there to extend my heartfelft sympathy. Please know that I love you and hold you close in my heart. With all of my love and sympathy always, Carol

It was an honor caring for Mr.Horn. In the short time that I have known him (and the rest of the family), he showed joy, humility, laughter:), and honesty. He is such a true, living example for me: one of giving, helping, and serving. It's rare to see a man so peaceful with himself and accepting of death. He was and will be an inspiration for me! I have a funny feeling I will be seeing him in heaven. God bless the Horn family: Mrs.Ruth, Sharon, Mr.George & Jaime, Melvin & Vel, Ashley, and Ms.Marjorie. I absolutely fell in love w/everyone, and I know the Lord will show Himself through all of you, just as He did in Mr.Horn. You all are in my prayers. May Jesus Christ live and shine in each and everyone one of you!

Don will be missed by many people. He was a very intelligent man and a good listener. I'm so blessed to have known him through his son, and daughter in-law, George and Jamie Horn, who kindly made me one of their own when I was at Austin Presbyterian Seminary. May God rest his soul in eternal Peace.

Please accept my heart-felt sympathy for the loss of your beloved Mr. Horn. I was an Eagle Scout in Troop 60 from '63 - '67 and it was one of the most memorable times of my life. Don Horn was an excellent leader and I still carry within me the knowledge and confidence that he and the other leaders conveyed to us. My thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of grief.

Some of my best childhood memories are from my time spent in the Boy Scouts in Mr. Horn's Troop 60. What a generous man! May your many memories comfort you in your time of loss and grief.

It's been 48 years since I became one of Don Horn's Eagle Scouts in Troop 60. I cherish that accomplishment, and have always been grateful to Don's extraordinary efforts of leadership - often leading by pushing me from behind! He was a great inspiration in my early years, and I will forever be in his debt. I send my condolences to the family of this fine man.

Don Horn will be missed by many. He was a great leader, and sincere friend. He led a great coalition in the 60's which elected the first Black female Senator Barbar Jordon and the first Hispanic State Rep. Lauro cruz. He will be remembered mostly because he was always there when he was needed at every level from the White House to the Court House.

Aunt Ruth, Aunt Margie, Melvin and Vel, George and Jamie, Sharon and David; We can choose our friends they say, but we can't choose our families. I don't know what I did to have been born into such a loving and caring family as we have, but for all my life I have known the love and support from Uncle Don, and all of the rest of my family. I will miss him more than you will know, but I will carry him with Mom and Dad in my heart always. Adelaide

For the brief time that I have known Don Horn, and in the few times that I have actually been in his presence, I have always been impressed with his dedication to service and care and concern for the plight of others. His legacy of service is one to which we all should aspire. I regret I did not get to know him better.

Tamra and I wish to express our deepest condolences to Ruth and the family. Don Horn was a great man who throughout his life stepped up for his fellow citizens, whether it was flying bombing missions to defend freedom during WWII, or the working people he forever stood for, or the sick, and the downtrodden he never forgot. And through all of that he was as friendly a man one could ever meet. He was a true friend and a mentor on how one should live their life and while we mourn his passing, we feel tremendously blessed to have had the opportunity to know and learn from him.
