Duane Capps Obituary

Duane Bonnell Capps
09/14/1943 - 11/16/2025
Duane Bonnell Capps, born on September 14, 1943, in Houston, Texas, passed away in his home in Rosenberg, Texas. He leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and strength that will be cherished by all who knew him. He is preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Polly Capps, his loving wife of 40 years, Peggie Capps, and their cherished dog, Sadie.
Although he grew up in Houston, as a child and young man he would spend as much time as he could with his father, Jack, and his grandparents, Maggie and Archie, at their ranch, first in Waverly and then in Blanco County. He graduated from Bellaire High School in 1962 and earned a bachelor's degree from Southwest Texas State University. After college, Duane enlisted in the Marine Corps and served his country in Vietnam as a member of the 11th Marine Regiment, reaching the rank of Captain. After completing his service, he returned to Houston to start his family and career.
Duane was always known as a strong man, both in his presence and in his character. Even more so, he was a kind man who loved people and animals alike. He was a good friend and a wonderful father and grandfather. Duane especially loved-whether at the post office, the bank, or the grocery store-to chat with people and hear how their lives and families were going, especially updates about children and pets. One of his greatest loves was going to the gym to work out and catch up with his many buddies-Duane was a fixture at area gyms for decades, including the Westland YMCA in Houston, the T.W. Davis YMCA in Rosenberg, and then, in retirement, at the Rosenberg Planet Fitness. His other hobbies included studying World War II history, a stint as a Golden Gloves boxer, and serving several terms during the 1990s as president of the Texas Association of Former Marines.
He is survived by his daughter, Kimberley Capps Costello and her husband Sean Costello; his son, Cory Capps and his wife Rachel Capps; his four grandchildren, whom he loved and adored: Chance Costello, Colton Costello, Harper Capps, and Zachary Capps; his beloved dog, Susie; and by his brother Mike and his wife Penny, and their children Casey, Callie, and Cameron.
In lieu of flowers, please direct any donations to the Rosenberg Animal Control and Shelter to help them place and protect animals.
A service to remember and celebrate the life of Duane Capps will be held on Monday, November 24, 2025 at Garmany & Carden Funeral Directors, 1201 4th Street, Rosenberg, TX 77471 (281)342-4671 at 2:00 pm. Visitation will begin at 1:00 pm, one hour prior to the service.
Following the service, all are invited to a reception at Schulze's Bar-B-Que at 1214 1st Street, Rosenberg Texas 77471.

We were the best of friends growing up in Bellaire. Many fond memories as we became adults, but nothing compared to those we shared in Junior High and at Bellaire High.. I guess we never have close friends like the ones we have when we are young. I hope I see him again in a place full of joy and peace.
