Earlene Causey Obituary

EARLENE LOWRIMORE CAUSEY, 72, died July 24, 2004. She was born September 12, 1931 in Okemah, Oklahoma, to Earl Lowrimore and Libbie Blackley Lowrimore. After graduating from East Central University in Oklahoma, Earlene served six years as an officer in the United States Navy. During her naval service, she met and married another officer, Bruce Maynor Causey, Jr, and served fifteen years as a naval wife. Subsequent to Bruce's retirement from the Navy, they moved to his hometown of Baytown and purchased a travel agency. During Earlene's work as a travel consultant, she became involved in the travel industry as a whole by becoming a member of the American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA). Through numerous regional offices and various committee chairmanships, she rose to become the first woman president and chief executive officer in ASTA's 73-year history. One of the most significant steps in her rise was to chair that organization's 1988 World Travel Congress in Budapest, Hungary. Her work on travel industry issues spanned six continents, where she led numerous industry, political, and international travel and tourism organizations. Earlene was a delegate to the first White House Conference on Travel and Tourism, in addition to being a delegate to a White House Conference on Small Business. As one of her proudest achievements, she co-founded and served as president of the travel industry's Rebuild Dubrovnik Fund, a non-profit foundation that raised funds to restore the damage done to this UNESCO World Heritage Site during the war in the former Yugoslavia. In recent years Earlene had remained an avid traveler, continuing to lead tour groups to destinations worldwide. She had long been an enthusiastic gardener, and recently became active in the Texas Gulf Coast Fern Society. Earlene had been a member of Grace United Methodist Church, and served on its Board of Stewards. Earlene was preceded in death by her parents, and also by her brother, William C. B. Lowrimore. She is survived by her loving husband of 47 years, Bruce; daughter, Missy Stout of Zionsville, IN; son, Bruce Earl Causey of Santa Fe, NM; brother, Robert Lowrimore of Laguna Beach, CA; sister, Heidi Sumter of Huntsville, TX; and sister-in-law, Mildred Lowrimore of Tyler, TX. She is also survived by her granddaughter, Lindsay Ellis Stout of Chicago, IL, and grandson, Alexander Braden Stout of Zionsville, plus several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 27th at Grace United Methodist Church, 304 N. Pruett in Baytown. Interment will follw Thursday, August 5, 2004 at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, July 26th at Navarre Funeral Home. I wore an elephant pin all weekend

in her honor. I will continue to think of her each time I wear some elephant jewelry. We must have faith and know that she is enjoying the "streets of gold".

Earlene will always be remembered by me as one of the GREAT LADIES of travel. Although I was relatively new in the business when she was ASTA president, she always managed to say "Hello, George" when we were at the same meeting or place.
