EDGAR JOHN CARL (ED) HAGSTETTE, JR. died on Monday, March 27, 2006. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on January 2, 1914 to E.J.C. Hagstette, Sr. and Freda Koppel Hagstette. A graduate of Tulane University's chemical engineering class of 1934, he later completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard University's Business School. He began his professional career with the Jefferson Lake Oil Co. in Louisiana. In the summer of 1941, Ed volunteered for active duty as a U.S. Navy Reserve Officer. Various assignments followed, both ashore and afloat in the U.S., as well as the European and Pacific Theaters. At the end of WW II, Ed was serving aboard the U.S.S. Boston in Admiral Halsey's Fast Carrier Task Force that entered Tokyo Bay upon the surrender of Japan. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. During the Cold War, Ed and his wife, Peggy, volunteered for an intelligence assignment with the Central Intelligence Agency in Europe. When that assignment was completed in 1953, Ed and Peggy moved to Houston where Ed resumed his career in the oil industry. Ed began his association with National Lead Co. (later NL Industries) in 1946 initially serving as a Baroid Division service engineer in south Louisiana. In 1970, in Houston, Ed became General Manager of the Baroid Division. Shortly thereafter, he was elected an NL Industries Corporate Vice-President, and was elected to the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee. In 1978, he retired from the company and subsequently joined Camco, Inc. as Chairman of the Board and the Executive Committee. After retiring as Camco chairman in 1982, he remained on the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee until 1988. Ed served on the Board of Directors of the American Petroleum Institute, as President and Director of the Petroleum Equipment Suppliers' Association, as National Regent and President of the Houston Chapter of NOMADS, as President of the Petroleum Oil Pioneers Society, and as a member and officer of other industry and professional organizations. Interested in diseases of the eye and their prevention, he had a long association with The Retina Research Foundation which he served as a member of the Board of Directors. He was a member of the Houston Country Club and the Petroleum Club for many years. Ed was predeceased by Peggy, his beloved wife of more than 55 years, by his parents, and by his brother, Lou. He is survived by his daughter, Jean and her husband, Hank Tate, of Houston; daughter Margot and her husband, Paul Grangaard, of Edina, Minnesota; son Eric, of Houston; son Guy, of Houston; eight grandchildren: David and wife, Lydia, Andrew, Stephen, and Shannon Tate; Elise, Annika, Mark, and Blake Grangaard; great-grandson Joshua Tate; niece Susan Hagstette Menkhaus and husband, John, of Alpharetta, Georgia; and other beloved relatives. The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 2, from 3:00 p.m. 6:00 p.m. at the family home, 12310 Beauregard, Houston. It is with heavy hearts that we

receive the news, from Guy, of

his father's passing.

We share your grief, but find great

comfort in our knowledge that Ed

and Peggy are together again.

The passing of a parent is a grievous event, even after a very long and full life. My mother passed away only two weeks ago at 97, so I understand your loss.

But your grief must be matched with pride for a life so marked by distinction and achievement. Your father was obviously a man who will long be remembered.
