Edward Todd Obituary

Dr. Edward Paul
Joseph Todd
1941-2016
Father, grandfather, surgeon, farmer, and community leader, Dr. Edward Paul Joseph Todd passed away Sunday April 10, 2016 of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). He was surrounded by family, and held in the loving arms of his wife of fifty years, Marilyn Todd. Born in Chicago on August 12, 1941 and raised in Houston, Dr. Todd attended Baylor University College of Medicine earning his MD in 1968 and PhD in 1969. After completing his residency and internship in General, Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at the University of Minnesota, he relocated his family to Lexington, Kentucky and continued his practice at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. Dr. Todd's medical career included pioneering surgical techniques and patents and ultimately was the Chairman of the University of Kentucky College of Medicine and Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Saint Joseph's Hospital. After retiring from medicine in 2000, Dr. Todd managed the family farm and led philanthropic activities. These activities include supporting Lexington Catholic High School, Habitat for Humanity and was a founder and the first president of the non-profit charitable corporation ABLE, Inc. (Assisting Better Living Everywhere). He led mission trips to Mexico, Bolivia, Burma, Kenya, Haiti, Ghana, Belize, and Appalachia with an emphasis on schools, orphanages, and medical clinics. Local Lexington projects included helping financially stressed senior and disabled citizens with home repair. Truly embodying the foundation's mission of Assisting Better Living Everywhere, Dr. Todd supported the education of children and offered medical relief to those in the most underserved parts of the world and his community. His proudest moments were spending time with family and hosting, along with his wife Marilyn, an annual farm camp for their grandchildren at Franklin Woods Farm.
Dr. Todd is survived by wife, Marilyn Todd; children: Erin Newman and her husband Eric Newman of Austin, Texas; Ed Todd and his wife Ellen Todd of Ocala, Florida; Rachel Scanlon and her husband Scott Scanlon of Lexington, Kentucky; Daphne Hosinski and her husband Don Hosinski of Lexington, Kentucky; Crystal Leugers and her husband Alex Leugers of Cincinnati, Ohio; niece: Natalie Murray of Mountain View, California; grandchildren: Cole, Ethan, Adam, and Conner Newman; Madeleine, Scott, and Emily Scanlon; Edward, Jane, Samuel Todd; Marielle, Lillian, Mark Edward, and Julia Hosinski; and sister: Genie Bolt of Houston, Texas, her husband Jon and children Christopher and Kathryn. He is preceded in death by his infant twin sons, John and Joseph Todd; infant twin granddaughters, Angel and Grace Newman; his brother, Robert Todd; his sister, Rev. Nancy Todd Murray; and parents, Edward William and Georgine Todd. On Thursday April 14th, a visitation from 5 – 7 p.m. and Prayer Vigil starting at 7 p.m. will be held at Kerr Brothers Harrodsburg Road in Lexington, Kentucky. The Funeral Mass will be held on Friday April 15th 11 a.m. at the Cathedral of Christ the King, 299 Colony Road Lexington, KY 40502 and burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to ABLE Endowment at 3175 Custer Drive Suite #103 Lexington, Kentucky 40517 as well as Lexington Catholic High School and Hospice of the Bluegrass.

I worked with Dr Todd in the OR for many years. I am a surgical technician and assisted routinely on his cases. I loved him and his personality. He told me many times that he was glad I was in his room that day. ALS is a sad disease. I will miss 'Mr Ed'

Carey and Marilyn Page

Our friends, Marilyn and Ed Todd (and their family) have blessed our lives since we were classmates at Baylor University College of Medicine. Ed was a great friend, an accomplished researcher, physician, surgeon, educator, and doer of good deeds both locally and internationally. Marilyn, the love of his life, is perpetually joyful and equally as giving. Ed and Marilyn approached the fatal disease of ALS with the same grace, aplomb, and equanimity with which they lived live. Supported by faith and family, they continued doing as they could until the very end. Like St. (Pope) John Paul, II Ed serve as a model for living life to the fullest and and dying with dignity. Marilyn and I shall miss our very good friend and send our best wishes to Marilyn and the rest of the Todd family.
