Elmo Blair Meroney

Elmo Blair Meroney, Jr. passed into the arms of Jesus on October 3, 2025 at the age of 94. He was a man of integrity, genuine faith and a unique 'Elmo' humor that impacted all who knew him. His Visitation (10:00am) and Celebration of Life (10:30am) service will be held on Friday, September 17th at Tallowood Baptist Church, 555 Tallowood Dr, Houston, TX. Elmo was born on September 1, 1931 in Houston, TX to Elmo Meroney, Sr. and Abbie Dell Drouet Meroney. He graduated from Lamar High School in 1949. He married Katherine Joan Nelson in 1951 and earned his Business degree from Baylor University in 1953. He served honorably in the U.S. Air Force as a First Lieutenant in Germany. He worked with his father at E.B.Meroney Lumber Company then Elmo moved his family to the Mid-West as he pursued a career and Masters Degree in Parks and Recreation. After 12 years, he retuned to Houston to be near family and closer to Baylor. He also was able to do what he loved to do - make others laugh and share the good news of Jesus Christ as he worked in sales and marketing.
A member of Tallowood Baptist Church since 1974, Elmo served faithfully as deacon and Sunday school teacher for 50 years and led the Tallowood prison ministry for 3 decades. A bonus in 2006 was finding his wife Hedy there whom he called "God's blessing." after the loss of his first wife.
He loved his family above all and leaves behind a legacy of children, grand-children and great-grandchildren.
Elmo is survived by his adoring wife of 20 years, Hedy Gilmore Meroney and his 3 children- Diane Clare Meroney Staats (Gary), James Edwin Meroney (Morag), and Kathy Lynn Meroney. He was also the loving grandfather of Nelson Blair Staats (Lauren), Mallory Mayne (Robby), Austin Staats (Amy) and Sarah Brooks (Brandon), Hunter Meroney, Brooke Meroney and Conner Meroney. He was the cherished great-grandfather of Noah, Ruthie and Nate Staats, Addy, Sam and Ava Staats, Layton, Miller and Maddox Mayne and Emery, Baker and Beckham Blair Brooks, and Hedy Gilmore Meroney's sons Matt Gilmore, Tim Gilmore and John Paul Gilmore (Jacqui) Gilmore along with her 3 grandsons Sebastian Boring (Malia), Colton and Chance Gilmore.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 50 years, Katherine Joan Nelson.
