Felix Cook Obituary

Cook
Felix Derwyn Cook The strong yet gentle spirit that was Felix Derwyn Cook departed this earth on February 21, 2011. He was born on March 7, 1951 to Felix and Opal Cook. He accepted Christ at an early age and received Christian training at Trinity Gardens First Baptist Church. He graduated from Texas A & I University in Kingsville, Texas, receiving a BBA in Management. He was employed for 27 years with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company where his commitment to excellence, philanthropic endeavors, and relationship building were instrumental to his success. He was preceded in death by his adoring and beloved mother, Opal Augusta Ross Cook. He leaves to cherish his memory, his best friend and loving wife of 36 years, Jeri Lyn; daughter, Cassye DomiNique; step-daughter, Shannon Dione Grigsby; his devoted father, Felix Lopez Cook; mother-in-law, Winnie Mauryne Grigsby; step-grandson, Nicolas Spenser Grigsby; brother, Dwayne Butler Cook and sister Alecia Davis and a host of extended family members and loving friends.

My sincere condolences to The Cook Family and everyone who mourns his passing. He was a delightful, dear, and kind man. While researching his geneology he contacted me to see if we were related. Unfortunately, we could not say for sure. But, I would have been proud to be his relative because he was just a good person. And, I am so touched that he was such a big fan of my teacakes.
My thoughts and prayers are with each of you. Hopefully, you will find comfort in the wonderful memories you shared. And, smile when you consider how happy he must be meeting all of those ancestors that he researched over the years. May God be with you always. You are loved and cared for by so many.

To the Cook family.

Felix was such a wonderful human being, that we know the spirit of God dwelled in him. His light shined brightly and we saw his good works to glorify our Father which is in heaven. Now, Felix is home with God whom he loves for we as believers know that absent from the body is present with the Lord. 2 Corithians 5:8.

I met and worked with Felix at SBC as I was transitioning in my career there. I will always treasure his guidance and extensive knowledge which he shared. It was so helpful in an uncertain time of life.

My sincere thoughts are with the family. But, human words cannot adequately console in times of grief. So, I offer you heavenly comfort from the divinely inspired written words of God in
I Thessalonians 4:13-18.

May the love of God keep and comfort you at this difficult time.

To Jeri, Cassye, the Cook and Ross Families.

The passing of Derwyn has been a great loss for our family. He was a angel here on earth and I know he'll be one in heaven. I loved talking with him about our heritage and meeting some of my family on the West Coast through his efforts on My Family.Com.

I was also a Southwestern Bell employee and could always call him.

You have my deepest sympathy and that of Mr. Ennis McCowan and the McGowen Family.

To the Family:

O gracious Father, enable us Thy servants to bow before Thee in humble submission to Thy Divine appointment. Draw us, we pray Thee, unto Thyself, that while we mourn the loss of Felix whom we have so much loved, we may obtain consolation in the fuller knowledge of that love of Thine which at the first provided for us so great an earthly blessing, and is effectual to supply the place of every gift which Thy wisdom removes; and grant us, when this life of trial is ended, to find with Felix who has been taken from us a merciful judgement in the last day and a joyful entrance into Thy glory; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Lord.

My prayers are with the Cook family, know that GOD makes no mistakes. He has chosen an angel. His ticket has been signed and punched for glory.Even though you can't see him, he is still with you in mind and spirit. He just moved to a new address, where the streets are paved of gold, and pearlie white gates, no more sickness and suffering, no more worrying. Nothing but peace and happiness and joy. But just hold to GODS unchanging hand, he will see you through. Just keep the faith and hold on, for joy comes in the morning. GOD BLESS YOU ALL.

"Be not dismayed, what'ever be tide God will take care of you, beneath His wings .... God will take care of you." While our hearts are saddened and our tears are flowing, we can still thank God for the man, husband, father, son, brother, and friend that He allowed to make a difference on this side - Felix came to have a relationship with God and demonstrated that relationship through his Godly walk and service. Now he's resting and waiting to be caught up in the air, to live with Jesus forever in a prepared place called Heaven.
So family and friends, we can praise God and be encouraged as Felix is now a witness that we to can make it into the kingdom. Thank you God for the life of Felix.

To the wife and family of my high school classmate:

I share the sentiments of many of our classmates (Wheatley High School Class of ’69). Felix and I worked on publications (the Wheatley Herald and the class yearbook) under the awesome leadership of the late Ms. Marie C. Fonsworth. He was an excellent student and was always prepared for the task at hand. Wisdom and success were quite evident, even in those early years of his development. I am certain that Felix was just as prepared for his transition and is receiving rave reviews from Our Father in Heaven. This is so reflective of the tremendous legacy that he leaves behind. May the outpouring of prayers, love and support of friends and community sustain the Cook family during this difficult time. Felix was simply “the best”.

Dear Family:

Our deepest condolences are offered at the homegoing of your loved one. Although I did not know Felix personally, I know the Father Dr. Felix and Minister Duane. My better half knows Jeri from countless affiliations in the business of education. It is true that fruit can be identified by its proximity to the tree that held it. Felix came from a great tree filled with many spiritual gifts from God. Further, it is equally true that a good wife absords and emulates all the qualities lived out in her presence by her spouse. Dr. Felix and Jeri are two of the best examples of Christian influence I (we) presently know. One by actual experiences with and class room learning under and the other by an effervescent witness from my own companion. I heard so much goodness about Jeri until I felt I knew her! That being said, I am certain that Felix was a possesser and conveyer of these same God given qualities seen in his family members . Oh yes, its all very true, we shall see loved ones again in that great getting up morning with our Christ! Stay strong in the Lord always, our prayers are with you.

Felix was a co-worker that many respected, trusted, and relished his wisdom. You could talk to him and know he would be sincere in what he shared with you. He always had your best interest at heart. I had the opportunity to work with Felix on a joint community initative between SBC and Chasecom. The project involved the Shape Community Center and it's after school program for high risk students. Our task was to teach them Intro to Computers. Felix always arrived to the center committed to imparting his knowledge upon the youth. He was firm yet compassionate. He was especially concerned with guiding the young men, and would spend extra time talking to them about excellence. At the end of the program he had earned their respect, and they had earned his big wide smile. Felix stood tall in statue, and stood even taller in his principles. Many condolences to the Cook Family, and our SBC Family.

To the Cook Family,
My prayers go out to you at this time of a great loss.
I met Felix in 1985 while working for SWBT in the PREMIS/SAG/E911 dept. When I started inputting data into the 911 system I was given no training. Felix called me on the phone and told me it was nothing I could mess up that he couldn't fix from his system. That gave me the confidence to experiment and learn how to work the 911 database with ease. I will always treasure the times he would send the clerks a message on their machines, sometimes very early in the morning, and tell us what a great job we were doing. Felix had a love and compassion for his fellow man.

I was blessed in this lifetime to share special moments with a tempered spirit who was as kind as he was strong. These memories spanned nearly half a century, and during that time he taught me to savor the flavor of life and enjoy each precious moment.

As a high school classmate he had a soft conversation followed by a smile that was unique and genuinely from the heart. I will miss you Felix as I continue the journey you shared with me. You were indeed "The Equal Temper of an Heroic Heart." To the Cook Family . . . What a legacy!!! I worked with Felix at Southwestern Bell/AT&T. He had such a loving, caring spirit. He was always encouraging, thought provoking, and challenging. He challenged others to be and do their best for the good of all.
In times like these, it's good to know that your loved one lived with a relationship with the Almighty God. The Bible says we do not have to grieve as those who have no hope. Knowing that Felix surrended his life to Christ assures us that when Christ returns for the Church, Felix will be one of the first to rise and those of us who are still alive will be caught up with him to meet the Lord in the air. Isn't that good news? This isn't the end but the beginning of eternity for Felix.
Be encouraged knowing that you're not walking this journey alone. God is with you in this valley of death. He is faithful to His word and He will provide the comfort and peace you need at this time.

Felix was the best neighbor one could have. He was so kind and caring and will be greatly missed. May God be with his family.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
