Frank Matthews Obituary
09/05/1942 - 08/29/2025
Frank F. Matthews, retired Associate Professor of Mathematics and one of the founding faculty at the University of Houston–Clear Lake, passed away peacefully on August 29, 2025.
Born on September 5, 1942, in Cleveland, Ohio, Frank was predeceased by his parents Frank F. Matthews, Sr., and Cecelia Figas Matthews. Frank earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the California Institute of Technology, and both his Master's in Mathematics and Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from The Ohio State University.
He inspired generations of students with his deep knowledge, accessibility, and dedication to the discipline of mathematics.
Frank was a devoted husband to Dorothy Feeney Matthews, with whom he shared a loving marriage since 1969.

Several years before I met my current wife, she dated a professor at UHCL. He introduced her to Frank, a mathematics professor who was a close friend. She recognized Frank because he had been a graduate student at Ohio State where she was an undergraduate math major. Later, when we were dating, she told me this story because in her life she has had many coincidental connections. That led me to add a layer of coincidence by telling her about my freshman year at CalTech in the fall of 1959. Incoming frosh were randomly assigned other frosh as temporary roommates for 2 weeks during a sorting process to permanently place each freshman in one of the 4 Student Houses. My randomly assigned roommate was Frank Matthews. He ended up in Fleming House while I went to Dabney, and we did not have much contact after that.
