Gayle Saunders was like a second mom to me, and she had a remarkable way of knowing exactly what Stuart and I were up to, long before we ever did it. We used to joke about having to factor her into our plans - the "Gayle Factor" - because there was absolutely nothing you could sneak past her. I´m convinced she could hear us whispering from two rooms away.
Some of my favorite memories are of her picking us up from basketball practice or carting us around town, always jumping right into our conversations, laughing and teasing us like one of the gang. I probably talked to her every day growing up-every call started the same way: "Is Stuart there?" followed by her cheerful, "Hold on Eric, I´ll get him!"
You also can´t think of Gayle without thinking of her "world famous" queso, which we devoured straight from old Cool Whip containers with original Doritos.
Gayle always added a little spark to everything around her, and it seemed like she took special joy in keeping us all on our toes. Now that she´s reunited with Fred, I have to imagine he´s been wandering around heaven, just a little bit lost, waiting for Gayle to show up and tell him exactly what he should be doing next. The truth is, no matter how accomplished or capable Fred was, he knew better than to question Gayle once she set him straight-and she always did, with that perfect mix of love and authority. Heaven´s bound to be running smoother now that she´s there giving out instructions, and Fred is right where he belongs, happily following her lead again.
Growing up with her looking out for us was a gift, and I´ll always cherish the years of laughter, guidance, and genuine love she shared so generously.
