George Aurich Obituary

Rev. George C. Aurich
1934-2015
Rev. George C. Aurich passed away peacefully on the 16th of July 2015, while surrounded by family and friends. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, on December 8, 1934 to Eleanor and Merritt Aurich. After graduating from Concordia Seminar in 1959, George came to Houston to serve in campus ministries at U. of H., T.S.U. and Rice University. After ministering at several Houston area Lutheran Churches, he became full time Pastor of The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, while also serving as Headmaster of Memorial Hall School and for many years, the RR Ranch Boarding Facility.
This amazing "Gentle Giant" of a man touched so many people during his life. Reverend Aurich was able to combine his ministry with teaching, mentoring and offering guidance to his congregations, students and so many others. While fulfilling his daily commitments to the school and church, he continued to share his love and compassion of our Lord, reaching out within the Houston Community for over 50 years. Up until his time of passing, George continued to teach, preach, perform baptisms and weddings, and was constantly visiting people in hospitals and nursing homes. His work never ended.
George also worked as Chaplain of Big Brothers of Houston, served as a committee member of the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, Steer Committee, was a member of the Houston Area Rotary Club, Houston Petroleum Club and River Oaks Breakfast Club. He served as Chaplain of Lakewood Yacht Club and was recently appointed Rev. Admiral George Aurich, Chaplain, Sam Houston Squadron of the Texas Navy.
"Papa Bear", was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Donna "Dandy" Aurich. He is survived by his loving family, his children, Scott Aurich and wife Wanda, Mark Aurich and wife Dede, Jimmy Aurich and wife Dale, Kimberly Taylor and husband Billy; his grandchildren, Scotty, Nowery-John and wife Sara, Colton, Kimberly and husband Bryan, Hunter, Cole and Hannah.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o'clock in the afternoon until eight o'clock in the evening on Wednesday, the 22nd of July, in the library and grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
A memorial service, to Celebrate George's life, is to be conducted at two o'clock in the afternoon on Thursday, the 23rd of July, at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 3471 Westheimer Road in Houston.
Prior to the service, the family will have gathered for a private interment at Memorial Oaks Cemetery.
In lieu of customary remembrances, contributions in George's memory may be directed to Memorial Hall School, 2501 Central Parkway, Ste A-19, Houston, TX, 77092.

Mr. George was a gentleman. I had been studying in Memorial Hall School and had been taken very good care of by Mr. George Aurich and his wife Donna Aurich. The happiness, love and care they gave me was a heart whelming time for me.
Trips to the Rodeo shows, fishing with all the students who were living at the barn, The wonderful animals at the barn, the games played in the barn. I still remember Mr. George and Ms. Dona's Lincoln car and I always talk to my father about their cars. The wonderful food, which was served. I really appreciate the maid's efforts as well because Mr. George made sure I was taken good care of by them. My deep condolences to Mr. George's family. May his soul rest in peace.

George was a great friend to our family. One fond and fun memory I have of George was his conduction of our mother's funeral service at Lakewood Yacht Club. Her favorite hymn was "Onward Christian Soldiers". He announced that that singing would close the service and it would be "first verse only", which I appreciated very much; his closing remark was "the bar is open". We miss George. Milton Allen

It was my pleasure to be the caretaker for Rev. Aurich's pool at their vacation home outside of Lakeway on Lake Travis. He, Donna and their children were a blessing to me during my formative years there and it is with great sorrow that I learned of his passing. Godspeed, Reverend Aurich.

I reread what I wrote about George and how much we all cared about him. I have a memory of him when he work as a garbage man for the summer to earn extra money before going back to the sem. He always had a smile always had something funny to say and loved everyone and I mean everyone. I could not picture George not carrying about anyone even those that may have said harmful words about him. George was such a godly man in my eyes. I only wish I was half the person he was. Rest in piece George . I shall remember you the rest of my life. Or while I am at the right side of the grass. Larry Downing Port Hueneme Ca

Pastor George and Jerry Woodfill at Lakewood Yacht Club

July 22, 2015

The picture was taken by my wife, Betty, after dinner on October 16th of last year. It's the reason I was so saddened by the sudden, altogether unexpected, passing of a life-long friend a few days ago. But the photo says so much about what I admired about my former Lutheran Campus Pastor George when I was a struggling engineering student at Rice University in the early 1960s. George would often visit me on campus in those days. Being from Illinois/Indiana, he loved the game of basketball, and I was having a dismal career as a Rice varsity player. My father had died just days before my mother drove me to Rice. I had received a Rice basketball scholarship. So having George as my campus pastor was a great blessing.

But about the picture: Providentially, in the past three years, Pastor George and I reconnected after more than four decades apart. I had no idea he was active with the Lakewood Yacht Club just blocks from our home near the Johnson Space Center where I remain an employee after 50 years. Somehow, Pastor George, active for many years educating high school students, discovered I might be a person who could encourage his young people in STEM studies. To that end, he invited me to share a program often presented to high school students visiting NASA: FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION; STEPS TO SUCCESS. This led to meeting his wonderful family, the staff of his school, and many of his friends when I hosted them for a school visit to the Johnson Space Center's Saturn Five facility. Later, he asked me to serve as the school's commencement speaker. But what was so impressive about George was that he always wanted to reward those who blessed him. All too often, we are quick to forget those who have helped us in some form or fashion after requesting assistance. George was not like that at all. He tried to share a love gift for my coming to his school which I signed over to the students. Then, after the visit to the space center, he called me four different times wanting to take Betty and me for dinner at the Yacht Club. I kept making excuses, not wanting him to have to drive a considerable distance just to take us to dinner. But finally, I agreed, knowing George had that something within that was so important to him, returning a favor. While we dined, he received calls from those he encouraged. This altogether witnessed to us the measure of the man as a pastor and concerned friend of all. I really expected we would continue in years to come meeting from time-to-time as a result of reconnecting a few years ago. But now I know we will have that opportunity when my day is done on Earth just as my friend George's came a few days ago. So Godspeed, as we at NASA often say, to you Pastor George...see you again, and I thank you for all that you have done for me and meant to me. Jerry Woodfill

Pastor was a great and loyal man whom loved the LORD as he did his church. He came to the hospital to pray for my husband when he was so sick even though we were not members of his church. My mother in law and aunt were members and Pastor wasnt just our Pastor , he was our family. He was with us when my father in law was on his journey to GOD's Kingdom. He would come every week to Hempstead, Tx and bring sacrements for us to have the LORD's supper,While he prayed with us and over my father in law. I personally loved Pastor with all my heart and he will truly be missed by many. He has touched so many lives and we will never forget him. We Love You Pastor and know you are on GOD's right arm...May You R.I.P.

I have known George since 1986 when I joined the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Jr. Steer Auction Committee. George wore many hats in his life, and I was very fortunate that he put on a Stetson so I would cross paths and be able to meet him.

Since moving to Fredericksburg in 2005, I have not seen George. Recently I received a phone call from him, a very pleasant surprise for me. He was very apologetic as he stated that it was not me that he was trying to reach. Even though I was a "wrong number", we caught up for a few moments. George was still George, caring for others in need. I am not so sure that it was a wrong number, but perhaps an opportunity to say good-bye.

George was unique, and will be missed, especially by the "kids" who were so dear to him.

May God hold the family in His comforting hands during this time. Rest in peace, Big Guy!

I met Reverend George when he conducted my brother's funeral service. He and my parents have been friends for years. I wish I had met him much earlier in my life. After my brother's service I would see him occasionally at my parents home. He recently conducted my mother's funeral service and I had occasion to visit with him during my mother's illness. He was right there with us. He was generous, kind and a very strong man, very at home in his own character. I appreciate very much the friendship and support he has shown our family through the years and at various difficult times. On behalf of my family, I thank him for his presence in our lives. I'll miss you George. Milton Allen and Family.

Uncle George was one-of-a-kind....the uncle who would fly in to Clearwater to visit his folks and for all the important family events . . . Always full of life and wonderful stories of exciting places and events. He loved doing the Lord's work, which he did very well. We always enjoyed hearing from him around the holidays...he didn't sent cards or presents, but as soon as he read our Christmas letter, he would call and talk about how proud he was of his extended family and offered prayers for those in need. Our hearts go out to those closest to him, with whom he could spend the most time,. We are thankful for the memories and love. In peace and love, Annie and Butch Aurich
