Geraldine Whitcomb Obituary

ACelebration of Life Geraldine Coad Whitcomb (Mrs. Gail) 1911~ 2008 Geraldine (Gerry) passed from this life to be with her beloved husband, Gail on March 11, 2008. Geraldine was 96 and a resident at The Plaza at the Buckingham on Woodway. Geraldine was born in Billings, Montana in 1911. She and her mother, Lucy, moved to Seattle, WA where Gerry sang starring roles with the Pacific NW Opera Company, such as Carmen and other roles which featured her beautiful contralto voice. Geraldine was involved in the civic community in Houston in many capacities. She was on the board of the Sisters of Charity, the American Red Cross, The Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, The Houston Museum of Natural Science. Geraldine, as the wife of the prominent attorney and civic figure, Gail Whitcomb, who preceded her in death in 1994, was the power behind the many good works accomplished by the couple on behalf of the young city of Houston. Geraldine's daughter, Jerianne Kolber~Reeder says her mother, Geraldine, wanted to become a doctor but the war, the depression and circumstances brought her to Houston instead. She met her husband, Gail, in 1934 and after a whirlwind courtship of four months, the couple married on a cold March day. They remained married for over 60 happy and fulfilling years. Geraldine is survived by her daughter, Jerianne Kolber~Reeder and her husband, John, as well as Jerianne's two sons, Markus W. Kolber, an attorney in Taos, NM and Briton L. Kolber and wife Rory Richardson of Seattle, WA. Geraldine's son, Tom, preceded her in death in 1997. Tom's son Ty & wife Trish and their children, Rylan and Walker, the two great grandchildren, live in Houston. A memorial service will be held at St. Martin's Episcopal Church at 2:00 on Friday, March 28th in the Old Church at 171 Sage Road, Houston, with a reception at the church facility.

Ty, What an amazing legacy your Grandmother has left behind. You were so good to her and those deeds don't go unnoticed. I know that you are deeply saddened by her death but I know that she is resting peacefully. She and Tom and Sandy would be so proud of the Grandson and Son that they had all helped to raise. They will be right there all the way with you in your future endeavors. All my Love and support to you and your precious family. You have so many people who are there to guide you through these troubled times. May you continue to honor your family's name by maintaining your strong committment to what is right.

All of our Love,
DD Family

Dear Jerianne, John and all the family:

Heartfelt Greetings and Salutations from the Fleming's, January's, Shamblin's and Curtis's -

Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ who now has in Heaven a true saint to join the "hosts." Oh my goodness, what a life she lived! What a legacy, along with Gail, she left!

Having gone through this same passage with Durwood scarcely a year ago (and Jeri, you and John were with us) we know exactly your present feelings. Bitter and Sweet:
Bitter in the sense of loss after all the years and, Sweet knowing that she is now where she was headed from the moment of her birth.

Pam, Ken, Marty, Steve, Mother and Cheryl join me in all this and more. As we survey and think on our lives (with their mulitiple and rich blessings), the Whitcombs "gather round" with close friends and family.

I hope it will help you to know that your Dear Mother is now in a place where there is no more darkness and there are no more tears...

Next week will bring the sadness and despair of Good Friday. Three Days later, it will be Easter Morning...the day when indeed it's revealed that death is swallowed up in victory!

With Respect and our Love -

Jon Hugh
